About the Location
Historic Origins
Established in 1914, Kelvyn Park has a rich history tied to the Northwest Park District's efforts to provide local green spaces for the growing middle-class community in the early 20th century. It became part of the Chicago Park District in 1934.
The park is notable for its two-story brick fieldhouse, designed in 1928 by architect Walter W. Ahlschlager, a structure that features a fitness center, gymnasium, auditorium, and various meeting spaces.
Recreational Amenities
The landscaped grounds offer a variety of recreational opportunities spanning nearly 10 acres. Visitors can enjoy walking paths, two baseball fields, a football/soccer field, basketball courts, volleyball courts, and two tennis courts, all surrounded by mature shade trees.
For families, the park has a playground with swings, climbing equipment, and a water spray feature that operates during the summer. There are also picnic areas and open green spaces ideal for relaxation or sports.
Community Hub
Programs at the park cater to all age groups, from after-school programs and seasonal camps for kids to fitness classes for adults.
Kelvyn Park provides a vital community hub for residents and is a testament to sustainable urban park planning. Its proximity to Kelvyn Park High School and the surrounding residential area makes it a cornerstone of neighborhood life in the Hermosa community.
