About the Location
Green Oasis in Morgan Park
Positioned in Chicago's Morgan Park community, Almond Park is a modest yet charming green space that offers a breath of fresh air amid the urban landscape. At just 0.74 acres, this little slice of nature represents a peaceful retreat for folks in the neighborhood looking to unwind.
Historical Background
Before it became the serene spot we know today, this oval-shaped piece of land actually housed the water works for the Village of Morgan Park. The site was acquired in stages, with half of it coming under village ownership back in 1887. When Chicago annexed the Village in 1914, the Calumet Park District took over the maintenance duties.
Fast forward to 1957, and the property changed hands again when the Chicago Park District assumed control following the Chicago Park and City Exchange of Functions Act.
Park Naming
Though it existed for decades, the park didn't receive its official name until 1974. As part of a broader initiative to name parks after trees and plants, this little green space became Almond Park. The almond tree, with roots tracing back to China and numerous mentions in the Old Testament, gives us what has become the world's most popular nut.
Visitor Experience
What Almond Park lacks in size and amenities, it makes up for in tranquility. You won't find playground equipment or sports facilities here - and that's precisely its charm. It's a great spot to sit quietly with a book, enjoy a moment of calm, or simply appreciate a patch of greenery within the city. Sometimes the simplest spaces offer exactly what we need: a moment of peace in nature.
