California Park

History and Location

California Park has been a neighborhood fixture since 1917, when the River Park District established it, and over the decades it's evolved with additional amenities that make it what it is today. Spread across 14.8 acres along N. California Avenue near the North Branch of the Chicago River, it's grown into a well-rounded urban greenspace.

Facilities and Recreation

At the heart of California Park stands the McFetridge Sports Center, an indoor haven for year-round activities. Inside, you'll discover an ice rink that hosts both casual skaters and hockey enthusiasts, six indoor tennis courts, and programs designed for athletes of every age and skill level. Need a pit stop? The sports center provides public restrooms for visitors.

Step outside, and the park offers plenty more amenities. There's an impressive collection of athletic fields, two outdoor basketball courts, four tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a recently resurfaced softball field that's wheelchair-accessible with a smooth, even surface that makes play more enjoyable for everyone.

During summer months, kids flock to the popular water spray feature to cool off when Chicago's heat kicks in. For those seeking a quieter experience, the northern end of the park offers a tranquil natural area with prairie plantings of native species. This thoughtful green space does more than just look pretty - it reduces the need for mowing, watering, and chemicals while creating habitat for local wildlife.

Playground

Families with children will appreciate the well-designed playground that strikes just the right balance - enough excitement to keep kids engaged without being overwhelming. Little ones can enjoy slides, various types of swings, monkey bars, and a challenging net climber. One of the nicest features? The layout lets parents keep an eye on their children from practically anywhere in the playground area without having to hover directly over them.
