River Point Park

Urban Oasis

At 1.5 acres, River Point Park is the largest riverfront park in the heart of downtown Chicago - a welcome breath of fresh air amid the skyscrapers. It sits at the meeting point of the Chicago River and its branches, right next to the River Point building on Lake Street, as part of Chicago's ongoing riverfront renaissance expanding public access and creating innovative green spaces.

The park was designed by the Office of James Burnett, a landscape architecture firm that specializes in urban spaces.

Innovative Design

What makes this park interesting is what lies beneath - the terraced design conceals active Amtrak rail lines, effectively converting industrial infrastructure into a green space. The centerpiece is a verdant event lawn that faces the river, complemented by botanical gardens and courtyards made of decomposed granite.

There's no shortage of places to sit and unwind, with ample seating areas on both the riverwalk and plaza levels where you can take in the surrounding views. The thoughtful landscaping features native plants, botanical gardens, and diverse trees - not just pretty to look at, but contributing to a sustainable design that enhances the park's natural appeal.

Features and Attractions

The park integrates seamlessly with Chicago's treasured Riverwalk, adding 560 feet of new pathways that connect you to other sections along the waterfront. If you're walking through, you can't miss the Constellation - a circular red sculpture by Spanish-Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava that functions as the park's unmistakable visual anchor.

This bright red Constellation sculpture makes quite an impression with its leafy spiral form that twists in and out. It's particularly magical when sunlight bounces off its vibrant surface - try to catch it at dawn or dusk for an even more captivating view.

At the northern end, you'll notice sound walls that help muffle noise from the trains running below. The park also employs rainwater harvesting for irrigation, a smart environmental touch that reduces its resource footprint.

Access

You can reach the park easily from Lake Street and Canal Street. As a public space, it welcomes everyone to enjoy what it has to offer. The park opens daily from 6AM to 11PM, giving you plenty of time to experience this urban sanctuary.
