About the Location
History and Establishment
Winnemac Park spans 22.38 acres and is part of the school-park campus program. The park integrates land owned by both Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Park District, making it a shared space for recreation and education.
Established by the City of Chicago's Special Parks Commission in 1910, the park underwent significant renovations in 1999 with $2 million improvements. These enhancements included improved landscaping, the addition of 200 trees, and the creation of a scenic prairie garden with a nature trail.
Natural Features
The park's natural area contains three acres of native prairie habitat, featuring tall grasses and flowering plants like black-eyed susans and asters. This diverse ecosystem attracts butterflies and birds throughout the seasons.
Its prairie area has woodchip trails for walking and is maintained through community volunteer efforts. This area provides opportunities for quiet relaxation and nature immersion for visitors.
Recreational Amenities
Winnemac Park offers a variety of amenities including multiple sports fields, playgrounds, and walking paths. It is bounded by Damen, Foster, Leavitt, and Argyle Streets and lies adjacent to Amundsen High School and Chappell Elementary School.
The park serves as a hub for recreational activities, hosting youth programs, sports leagues, and summer camps. Recent upgrades in 2024 introduced a renovated baseball diamond, refurbished tennis courts, and new pickleball facilities.
Community Engagement
Improved lighting and ADA-accessible pathways from the 2024 renovations further enhance the park's usability for both the school community and local residents. These improvements make the park more accessible to everyone.
Visitors enjoy picnicking and participating in seasonal events, making Winnemac Park a versatile and valued green space on Chicago's north side.
