About the Location
A Piece of Joliet Heritage
Tucked away in Joliet lies West Park, a 40-acre green sanctuary managed by the Joliet Park District. As one of the city's earliest recreational spaces, this park has been the backdrop for countless community memories over the decades.
The park features expansive grassy areas that intermingle with pockets of woods and mature trees providing shade on sunny days. Yes, you might catch some highway sounds in the background, but honestly, the abundance of greenery and fresh air more than makes up for it.
Disc Golf Heaven
Disc golf enthusiasts will appreciate what West Park offers. West Park hosts one of Illinois' oldest disc golf courses, dating back to 1979. The course features 18 holes with solid concrete tees and ChainStar Pro targets that would make any disc golfer feel right at home.
What's nice is the flexibility - there are both short (AM) and long (Pro) tee pads with clear signage guiding you through the course. The layout offers a pleasant mix of technical wooded holes and more forgiving open areas. A small creek winds through the course, and several holes feature elevation changes that add just enough challenge without becoming frustrating. No matter if you're just starting out or have been playing for years, this course has something for you.
Beyond the Discs
Not into disc golf? No problem. West Park has plenty more to offer. The hiking and walking trails meander through some truly scenic spots, and during winter, these transform into cross-country skiing paths for snowy adventures.
The picnic area is particularly generous, featuring about ten extra-large benches where families can spread out and enjoy outdoor meals. Kids will love the recently updated playground with equipment suitable for various ages and energy levels.
You can find restroom facilities around the park that are kept stocked with essentials. For sports enthusiasts, the tennis courts and basketball courts with well-maintained hoops provide great options for active recreation.
Good to Know
West Park welcomes furry friends too - dogs are allowed as long as they're leashed. The trails make for perfect pet-walking routes, but it's worth noting that after heavy rain, some areas - especially around the disc golf course - can get a bit muddy and slippery.
Since the park sits in a residential neighborhood, parking can be limited during peak times, so you might want to plan accordingly. The park operates daily from 6AM to 10PM, accommodating both early birds and evening visitors.
While maintenance issues occasionally pop up (as they do in any well-used public space), West Park offers a variety of recreational opportunities while maintaining its connection to local history.
