Knoch Knolls Park
About Knoch Knolls Park
Park Overview
Tucked away in Naperville, Illinois, Knoch Knolls Park stretches across an impressive 260 acres, making it the largest green space in the Naperville Park District. The park is located at the meeting point of the east and west branches of the DuPage River, creating a natural haven that feels distant from suburban life.
There's plenty of parking available, but you might want to arrive early on weekends when spots fill up quickly. With its well-kept trails, spacious green areas, and variety of recreational facilities, many locals appreciate this park for its secluded nature.
Rich History
The story of Knoch Knolls begins in 1980 when Judge Win Knoch and Irene Knoch donated 13 acres of their farmland to the Naperville Park District. Like a growing family, the park expanded over the decades, incorporating Glyman Woods to the east in 1988 and the Biannucci Confluence to the west in 1989.
More recently, in 2021, the park grew by nearly 40 additional acres thanks to a generous donation from the Frank Rus Trust, further preserving this natural sanctuary for future generations.
Natural Ecosystems
Knoch Knolls features a variety of Midwestern ecosystems. From upland woods and river bluffs to prairie, woodlands, and lowland forests, the park showcases incredible ecological diversity. There's even a rare sedge meadow habitat that ecological enthusiasts will appreciate.
If you visit in early May, the forest floor is covered with bluebells, creating a particularly beautiful scene. It's a notable seasonal highlight of the park.
Trails and Recreation
Whether you're a casual stroller or serious hiker, Knoch Knolls has trails for everyone. The paved multi-use loop on the south side is well-suited for biking and wheelchair accessibility, while the dirt paths winding through the woods offer a quieter experience away from cyclist traffic.
The DuPage River Trail connects through the park, opening up possibilities for longer adventures that link to neighboring green spaces. Many sections are wheelchair-friendly, particularly the paved pathways.
Disc golf enthusiasts will appreciate the free 18-hole course that was renovated in 2014. With a mix of beginner-friendly and more challenging holes, it's suitable for players of all skill levels - from first-timers to seasoned disc golfers.
Water lovers haven't been forgotten either - you can fish along the riverbanks (just remember that those between 16-65 years old need a fishing license) or launch your kayak or canoe for a peaceful paddle on the DuPage River.
Nature Center and Amenities
The Knoch Knolls Nature Center acts as the educational heart of the park. Its showstopper is a 900-gallon freshwater aquarium where you can get up-close with fish species that call the DuPage River home. The center offers engaging programs about river formation, local wildlife, and area history - fantastic for curious minds of all ages.
Practical amenities haven't been overlooked. Clean, modern restrooms are conveniently located near the parking area and Nature Center. If you're planning a family gathering, you'll discover shaded picnic areas complete with tables and grills. For families with little ones, there's a playground with safety-focused padded surfaces where kids can burn off energy.
Wildlife and Scenery
Knoch Knolls has diverse wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for deer moving silently through the trees, hawks circling overhead, and curious chipmunks darting across the trails. Lucky visitors might spot owls, coyotes, turtles sunning themselves by the river, or fish swimming in the clear waters.
The scenery changes throughout the seasons, with highlights during spring wildflower season and fall foliage. The peaceful views of the DuPage River, serene woodlands, and open meadows make this park a favorite among photographers and those seeking a moment of tranquility.
Conservation Efforts
Beyond recreation, Knoch Knolls plays a vital role in local conservation. The Frank Rus Preserve, added during the recent expansion, is maintained as protected open space under a conservation easement overseen by The Conservation Foundation, ensuring this natural treasure remains preserved for generations to come.
