About Franklin School Park
A Piece of Fort Wayne History
The old Franklin School opened on St. Mary's Avenue in Fort Wayne back in 1921, educated local kids for six decades, then passed through the hands of the U.S. Navy and the Fort Wayne Police Department before finally coming down in 2016. What replaced it is Franklin School Park, a cozy 4.25-acre green space that keeps the memory of the site alive.
What we appreciate about this space is how it preserves the past - the original entrance arches from the school still stand, connecting yesterday and today. Take a moment to check out the historical plaque that tells the story of the site's educational roots.
What You'll Find There
At the heart of the park sits the David Hefner Pavilion, a practical year-round facility complete with a family restroom, kitchen, and multipurpose room (thank goodness for heating and air conditioning in Indiana's varied climate!). Right outside, you'll discover a concrete patio with built-in seating walls and some welcome shaded areas.

The park offers various places to sit and relax, including covered benches and summer umbrellas, but picnic tables are somewhat limited. It's worth noting that the park has an open, airy feel, but doesn't offer much natural shade since there aren't many mature trees yet.
Cool Off and Play
A popular feature here is the splash pad. Open seasonally from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., it's a wonderful spot for kids to cool down during those sticky Indiana summers. Our favorite detail is the user-friendly timer switch that even little ones can operate themselves.
A walking trail loops around open green spaces, meant for a casual stroll or getting some steps in. For families, the playground equipment and swings provide classic park fun that never goes out of style.
Community Hub
Franklin School Park has really come into its own as a neighborhood gathering place. All year long, you might catch farmers' markets, neighborhood fairs, and even concerts here. It fits nicely into Fort Wayne's park network, with Franke and Hamilton Parks less than a mile away if you're looking to explore more green spaces in the area.
