The park was established in 1959 when Mary Catherine Smeltzly, a retired history teacher, donated the land to create a memorial for Chief Little Turtle.
Final Resting Place
The park's primary significance lies in its historical importance as the final resting place of Chief Little Turtle. His grave was discovered in 1912 during the construction of a house in the area.
A grave marker was dedicated on June 13, 1960, to commemorate the site.
