About the Location

Historical Significance

Little Turtle Memorial is a small park spanning just 0.13 acres, dedicated to the memory of Chief Little Turtle, a prominent Miami leader. The park is situated east of Spy Run Avenue at Lawton Place in Fort Wayne.

The park was established in 1959 when Mary Catherine Smeltzly, a retired history teacher, donated the land to create a memorial for Chief Little Turtle.

Final Resting Place

The park's primary significance lies in its historical importance as the final resting place of Chief Little Turtle. His grave was discovered in 1912 during the construction of a house in the area.

A grave marker was dedicated on June 13, 1960, to commemorate the site.

Visitor Experience

Little Turtle Memorial serves as a quiet respite in a busy city, befitting the legacy of a man who dedicated himself to peace. The park provides a space for reflection and historical education.

Visitors have an opportunity to learn about the life and contributions of Chief Little Turtle to the region's history. Its small size and focused purpose make it a unique addition to Fort Wayne's park system, emphasizing the importance of preserving local history and honoring indigenous leaders.
