About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past
Swinney Park is one of Fort Wayne's oldest green spaces, with roots stretching back to 1869 when Colonel Thomas W. Swinney first leased his property to the city. When the Colonel passed away in 1875, he left behind not just memories but approximately 240 acres of land with one heartfelt condition - that it remain open and free for everyone to enjoy.
The park has witnessed some pretty significant moments in local history. In 1843, it hosted a grand celebration for the opening of the Wabash and Erie Canal. Later, it became home to the Allen County Fair and, from 1920 to 1953, the laughter and excitement of Trier's Amusement Park filled the air.
Lay of the Land
The St. Mary's River cuts through the heart of Swinney Park, creating two distinct sections. The eastern 46 acres sit entirely in the floodplain, while the western 48 acres mix low-lying areas with higher ground.
In 1912, the park became part of George Kessler's Park and Boulevard Plan, functioning as a western gateway to Fort Wayne and a northern anchor point along the St. Mary's River.
What You'll Find Today
Wandering through Swinney Park today, you'll discover a lovely blend of natural spaces and recreational areas. There's a small man-made lake that's recently been given some TLC, and if you look closely, you can still spot remnants of an extensive Japanese Rock Garden that was started back in 1928.
One of the park's best features is its access to the Rivergreenway, a trail system that follows the St. Mary's River. It's great for anyone wanting to connect with nature without leaving the city. The shaded paths alongside the river offer peaceful spots for walking, jogging, or biking with some really beautiful water views.
Frisbee golf enthusiasts will appreciate the 18-hole disc golf course that winds through the park's mature trees. Whether you're just starting out or have been playing for years, the course offers both challenges and scenic beauty.
Getting Active
For those interested in sports, Swinney Park offers basketball courts and tennis courts that are well-maintained. Baseball fans can enjoy the baseball diamond for both pickup games and organized events.
Families will feel right at home here. The playground area features modern equipment that kids love, while several picnic areas with tables and a pavilion make it easy to plan anything from a casual lunch to a family reunion.
If fishing is more your style, you'll discover some nice fishing spots along both the river and lake where locals often cast their lines. And there's plenty of open grassy space meant for throwing a frisbee, spreading out a picnic blanket, or just lounging with a good book.
A Touch of History
The historic Swinney Homestead, built in 1844 and now lovingly maintained by Settlers Inc., stands as a beautiful reminder of the park's rich history. This Federal-style home, later updated with Victorian Italianate touches, opens its doors to the public during special events, offering a fascinating window into Fort Wayne's past.
Good to Know
You can find modern restroom facilities with running water within the park. And feel free to bring your four-legged friends along - dogs are welcome as long as you clean up after them.
One of the nicest things about Swinney Park is that it rarely feels crowded, giving you space to breathe and relax. With its beautiful old trees, open meadows, and tranquil river views, it's a great escape when you need a break from city life without actually leaving town.
