About Garfield Park
A Walk Through History
Sprawling across 128 acres, Garfield Park isn't just any green space - it's Indianapolis' oldest city park, with roots stretching back to the late 19th century. Originally known as Bradley Woods and later Southern Racing Park, it was renamed to honor President James A. Garfield after his assassination in 1881. It's interesting to think about how generations of Indy residents have walked these same paths before you.
The park isn't just historically significant to locals - it's actually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If you're interested in memorials, don't miss the Grove of Remembrance, a touching tribute to those who served in World War I. Just north of the Conservatory, you'll also find a statue of Major General Henry W. Lawton, created by sculptor Andrew O'Connor. Lawton had a remarkable military career - he fought in the Civil War, led the operation that captured the Apache warrior Geronimo, and was ultimately killed in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. The statue originally stood at the old Marion County Courthouse before being relocated here in 1915.
Garden Paradise
The Garfield Park Conservatory and Sunken Gardens are notable highlights of the park. Designed by landscape architect George Edward Kessler and dedicated in 1916, the Sunken Gardens cover 3 acres in a European-style formal layout with paved brick walkways, benches, and three fountains. The gardens are replanted three times a year to follow the seasons - tulips in spring, annuals through summer, and chrysanthemums in autumn. A 2013 renovation upgraded the fountains with 61 LED illumination lights and 2,500 computer-controlled water jet nozzles, turning them into synchronized musical displays after dark. On summer evenings, the space hosts Music in the Garden, a concert series where live music plays against the backdrop of the illuminated fountains and seasonal flowers.

Look for the Pagoda picnic shelter, dating to 1903, which gets its name from the pronounced Asian influence on its curved copper roof, sitting atop an open structure of wrought iron, rock, and concrete. By the 1970s it was slated for demolition, but community opposition and fundraising saved it - making it both a distinctive landmark and a photo-worthy stop. Inside the Conservatory, there's a year-round tropical rainforest environment with a granite waterfall. The collection of exotic plants is somewhat unexpected for Indianapolis.
Get Moving
Feeling active? The Burrello Family Center offers indoor athletic facilities and community spaces for all sorts of activities. On hot summer days, the large outdoor pool and splash play area is popular and particularly enjoyed by kids.
The scenic trails weaving through wooded areas connect to the broader Indy Cultural Trail and Pleasant Run Trail networks, making this a great starting point for longer walks, runs, or bike rides. Bring your four-legged friend along - the paths are ideal for dog walking.

Families appreciate the two playground areas - a smaller space with classic swings and slides, plus a larger playground with more extensive equipment for adventurous kids. Within the grounds, you can find multiple picnic areas with tables and designated grilling areas, ideal for everything from casual lunches to birthday celebrations.
Natural Retreat
Despite being within city limits, Garfield Park offers a genuine connection with nature. The squirrels here are particularly bold and plentiful - bringing some nuts along might make you some furry friends.
The well-kept lawns and mature shade trees create perfect spots to lay out a blanket and enjoy a good book or simply watch the clouds go by. The wooded sections provide a home for local wildlife and add to the feeling that you've escaped the urban bustle, if only temporarily.
Creative Corner
The Garfield Park Arts Center keeps the cultural scene thriving with rotating art exhibits, performing arts programs, and creative classes for all ages. During warmer months, the MacAllister Center for the Performing Arts hosts open-air concerts, plays, and community events that bring the park to life with music and storytelling.
If you're visiting on a Saturday during the growing season, don't miss the farmers market where you can pick up local produce and handcrafted goods. During the year, various special events and concerts transform the park into a lively gathering space.
