About the Location
Recreational Features
Tucked away on the Eastside of Indianapolis in the Audubon Gardens neighborhood, Wes Montgomery Park spreads across nearly 40 acres of green space and recreational areas. Named after the legendary jazz guitarist who called Indianapolis home, this park connects recreational space with the musical heritage of its namesake. The standout guitar-shaped splash pad is a particularly thoughtful nod to Montgomery's musical legacy, blending fun with cultural appreciation.
Basketball Pavilion
Basketball enthusiasts will appreciate the park's standout feature. The park recently unveiled the city's first covered basketball pavilion in November 2023. This impressive structure houses two full-sized courts and two half-sized courts, complete with bleachers and excellent lighting. Unlike typical outdoor courts that are weather-dependent, this pavilion lets you shoot hoops year-round, rain or shine.
The pavilion is popular with players of all skill levels, offering a dedicated space for basketball in all weather conditions.
Splash Pad and Playground
On hot summer days, the guitar-shaped splash pad provides welcome relief. What makes this water feature special is that it doesn't tease with on-and-off cycles - the water elements run continuously, much to the delight of kids (and let's be honest, adults too).
Nearby, the playground area offers equipment for children of all ages, from toddler-friendly slides to swings for the bigger kids. One of the nicest aspects is the shade provided by mature trees surrounding the play area, making it comfortable even on sunny afternoons. It's an excellent spot to let the little ones burn off energy while you relax nearby.
Additional Amenities
Beyond basketball and water play, the park offers three baseball fields for those who prefer America's pastime. Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the extensive walking trails that meander through the grounds - ideal for morning jogs, afternoon walks with the dog, or just getting some steps in.
Planning a family get-together? The park's picnic areas with tables and dedicated grilling spaces make outdoor dining a breeze. There's also a public pool for those who want a more traditional swimming experience than the splash pad offers.
The park's open layout accommodates a range of activities, from quiet relaxation to active team sports.
Community Impact
More than just a recreational space, this park is the neighborhood's living room - a place where community bonds strengthen and new connections form. Local residents have championed green spaces like this one, recognizing their importance for both physical health and social wellbeing.
All year long, you can find the park hosting everything from birthday celebrations to impromptu community gatherings. Recent tree-planting efforts promise an even more beautiful landscape in the coming years, further enhancing this vital green space on Indianapolis' eastside.
