About the Location

History and Origins

Nestled on the northeast side of Indianapolis, Spades Park is a charming 31.24-acre green space with roots dating back to 1898. The park began with a generous six-acre donation from Michael H. Spades, a local real estate mogul who probably couldn't have imagined how treasured his namesake park would become.

Over time, the park expanded by an additional 25 acres, weaving itself into the fabric of the community. Back in the day, it featured a bandstand and shelter house where locals gathered for events, creating memories that have become part of the park's rich tapestry.

Recreational Features

If you're looking to get your steps in, Spades Park has 2.3 miles of pedestrian walking trails winding through peaceful surroundings. Nature lovers will appreciate that the park doubles as a bird sanctuary, making it a wonderful spot to catch glimpses of feathered residents going about their business.

Kids can burn off energy at the inclusive playground area, a popular spot for families seeking some outdoor fun. The playground boasts swings, slides, and a climbing jungle gym that's best suited for children between 4-10 years old. Just a heads-up: the equipment might be a bit challenging for the tiniest adventurers.

A scenic bridge crosses Pogue's Run, adding a touch of tranquility as the creek meanders through the grounds. As of 2024, you'll notice some construction on the west end where workers are busy extending the Pogue's Run Trail. When completed, this trail will connect downtown Indianapolis through Spades and Brookside Parks all the way to Pogue's Run Art and Nature Park.

Picnic and Gathering Areas

The park features a modest gazebo with a roof and seated tables - a nice spot for small get-togethers. This pavilion can accommodate about 2-4 picnic tables, but you'll need to bring your own as they aren't permanently provided.

Thankfully, mature trees dot the landscape, offering plenty of shaded retreats for spreading out a blanket and enjoying lunch. The park's terrain stays mostly flat, making those open grassy areas great for tossing a frisbee or kicking a soccer ball around.

Community Connection

Spades Park hosts the annual Feast of Lanterns each July. This festival has grown over the years, bringing together neighbors, families, and even four-legged friends for an evening under twinkling lights.

Here's a fun bit of trivia: local lore says that infamous bank robber John Dillinger played baseball in the park as a child. From future outlaws to everyday citizens, the park has welcomed generations of visitors under the watchful care of Indy Parks and Recreation.

Just a stone's throw away sits the Spades Park Branch Library, a historic Carnegie library that adds cultural flair to the neighborhood. Locals particularly appreciate the friendly staff who keep this community resource thriving.

Amenities and Accessibility

Note that the park doesn't have permanent restroom facilities or water fountains. During summer months or special events like the Feast of Lanterns, you might find portable toilets available, but it's best to plan accordingly.

While the natural setting is part of the park's charm, the limited paved pathways might present challenges if you're pushing a stroller or using a wheelchair. Despite its urban location, you'll come across the park offers a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere with reasonable noise levels - a little oasis in the city.
