About the Location

Historic Origins

Nestled in the heart of downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Greene Square is a historic urban park that's seen quite a transformation over the years. Dating back to 1843 when it was originally platted alongside the city's streets, this green space bears the name of Judge George Greene, one of the visionaries who helped establish Cedar Rapids.

Modern Renovation

In 2016, Greene Square got a major facelift with a $1.9 million renovation that breathed fresh energy into this downtown escape. The redesign wasn't just about aesthetics - it created a flexible green space where people can gather for events both intimate and grand.

Today, you can find improved pathways and plenty of comfortable seating within the park. The renovation created an open, versatile space that offers a green retreat amid the urban landscape.

Artistic Elements

One thing you can't miss is "Rollic" - a massive art installation that spirals 40 feet long, 26 feet wide, and reaches 20 feet into the sky. This coil-like sculpture, crafted from brushed stainless steel by California artist Bruce Beasley, does more than just catch the eye. It cleverly connects the park visually to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art to the north and the Cedar Rapids Public Library to the south, creating a cultural pathway through downtown.

Design Features

While embracing the new, the park's design thoughtfully preserves pieces of its past. A single diagonal pathway - part of the park since day one - remains intact, honoring its historical role as a main route from residential neighborhoods to the former train depot.

The water feature offers a subtle nod to local history with granite pavers arranged to resemble railroad tracks. During warmer months, the splash pad comes alive, offering a refreshing spot for visitors to cool off - particularly popular with families on hot summer days.

Community Hub

Greene Square truly functions as the city's living room - a place where the community comes together in all seasons. It's hosted everything from protests to celebrations, becoming a stage for Cedar Rapids' public life.

The holiday season brings special magic to the park with the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony that draws locals together in celebration. These traditions reflect the park's role in community life in Cedar Rapids.

Current Use

On any given day, you'll find this downtown park representing a peaceful retreat with open grassy areas well-suited for relaxing, reading, or catching up with friends. Its strategic location between the public library and art museum creates a natural cultural corridor through the city.

Note that like many urban parks, Greene Square has different moods depending on the time of day and season - sometimes buzzing with activity, other times offering a moment of tranquility amid city life.
