About the Location
From Landfill to Landmark
Positioned in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mount Trashmore is an excellent example of creative reimagining. This isn't your typical park - it's a former landfill that's been transformed into something the community can actually enjoy. Talk about a glow-up!
The centerpiece is a massive hill created from layers of compacted waste covered with clean soil, offering panoramic views of the Cedar Rapids skyline and the winding Cedar River. It's interesting to see how a place once dedicated to waste has been transformed into a recreational space.
Hit the Trails
You've got two main trail options here. The Stumptown Trail is your go-to for hiking and running, stretching about a mile in length. It features boardwalks and stairs with some seriously steep sections that'll definitely get your heart pumping. The trail is well-kept, and you can reach the summit in around 20 minutes - though you might want to take it slower to catch your breath along the way.
If mountain biking is more your speed, the Trashmore Trail delivers a fun downhill experience. This gravity-fed flow trail runs about 4,000 feet and has all the features you'd expect from a proper flow trail. It's designed exclusively for bikes - so hikers and runners, you'll need to stick to your own path. The trail is particularly welcoming for those just getting into mountain biking.
Getting Around
Looking for the quickest way to the top? The Overlook Trail is a multi-use path that's open to both cyclists and those on foot. At about 3,400 feet long, it's the shortest route to the summit.
You'll need to check in at the on-site recreation building before hitting any trails. Keep in mind that the park operates seasonally, usually opening in spring and closing when the weather turns cold in late fall or early winter.
Note that these trails aren't stroller-friendly - there are stairs throughout even the "easy" trail, and alternative routes feature steep hills. And definitely bring water bottles, especially on hot days.
The Summit View
Once you make it to the top, you'll find good views of downtown Cedar Rapids, with the Alliant Building standing prominently in the skyline. There's a pavilion with seating where you can catch your breath and soak in the panorama.
The climb covers about 948 feet and offers a solid workout for those seeking moderate exercise. Many locals loop the trail multiple times to really get their steps in.
Park Perks
Bring your four-legged friends along - the park is dog-friendly and even has a dedicated water fountain just for dogs. Clean restrooms are available at the recreation building, with porta-potties conveniently located halfway up the Overlook trail.
If you're planning to make a day of it, you'll discover picnic tables inside the entrance building. The trails are dotted with several benches where you can rest and enjoy the scenery.
Take the Challenge
Feeling ambitious? The Mt. Trashmore Challenge invites you to climb to the summit 140 times within a season. Complete it and you'll earn prizes redeemable in the Czech Village and NewBo Market - a nice bonus for all that cardio!
A Green Legacy
Mount Trashmore is a good example of sustainable land use. You might occasionally catch whiffs from the nearby active landfill depending on which way the wind blows, but it's just a subtle reminder of this place's origins and environmental purpose.
The area has become home to various wildlife, and you'll likely spot different animals and birds along the trails as you make your way through this remarkably reclaimed space.
