Honoring Those Who Served

Since its establishment in 1996, Veterans Memorial Park has become a meaningful spot in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for both quiet personal reflection and community gatherings to honor veterans. The modest 1-acre park sits at the intersection of East 14th Street and Waterloo Road, offering a tranquil space dedicated to those who've served in our nation's military.

The Heart of the Memorial

At the center of the park stands a 50-foot flagpole rising from a circular plaza that immediately catches your eye. Look closer at the base, and you can find five black granite tablets arranged in a pentagon formation. Each tablet is beautifully etched with the seal of one of the five branches of the U.S. military - a powerful visual reminder of service across all military divisions.

Brick walkways extend outward from this central area like spokes on a wheel. These aren't just ordinary paths - each brick can be purchased and personalized with a veteran's name, military branch, and service dates, creating a lasting tribute that literally forms the foundation of this special place.

Beyond the Monuments

While exploring the park, you'll come across a miniature Statue of Liberty, a charming piece of history gifted to Cedar Rapids by the Boy Scouts of America back in 1952.

The landscape is thoughtfully planted with evergreen and flowering trees that provide both beauty and a sense of peace. Five granite benches encircle the central plaza, offering spots to sit and contemplate the sacrifices made by service members.

Though Veterans Memorial Park may be small in size, it provides a meaningful space where the Cedar Rapids community connects with and remembers the legacy of those who have served our country.
