About the Location
Riverfront Escape
Nestled along the Mississippi River in downtown Davenport, Centennial Park stretches across 250 acres of what was once industrial land. It's one of four parks that line Davenport's riverfront, alongside LeClaire Park, Veterans Memorial Park, and River Heritage Park.
The park borrows its name from the Rock Island Centennial Bridge standing tall at its eastern edge. The views of the Mississippi River make this spot excellent for quiet contemplation or simply watching the water flow by.
From Landfill to Landmark
Believe it or not, this gorgeous green space used to be a city landfill (until 1975). The northern section was once bustling with trains as a rail yard, while the southern part hosted festivals in the late 20th century.
The transformation began in 2000 as part of a $100 million initiative called River Vision, getting the official thumbs-up from the city council in 2004. It's a notable transformation from industrial wasteland to public green space.
Recreation for Everyone
The park offers plenty of ways to play. Anglers can try their luck along the extensive riverfront, and there's a boat launch (though it could use a bit of TLC, according to some regular users).
Sports enthusiasts will find basketball courts and rugby fields - with rugby matches typically happening on Saturdays if you want to catch some action. Families flock to the modern playground with its creative climbing structures, while kids of all ages cool off at the sprayground splash pad, thoughtfully designed with separate zones for the little ones and bigger kids.
One of the park's standout features is its skateboard park, which opened in 2006. At 33,000 square feet and designed by professionals from SITE Design Group in Arizona, it's a real draw for skaters throughout the Quad Cities. The Mississippi River provides a unique backdrop for skating.
Trails with a View
The Riverfront Parkway winds through the park, offering smooth paths for walking, jogging, or cycling alongside the Mississippi. These paved trails connect to neighboring riverfront parks, so you can easily extend your adventure if you're feeling ambitious.
Many people come simply to soak in the peaceful river views. There's something meditative about watching the Mississippi's current, especially at sunset when the water catches the fading light. Many visitors enjoy finding a bench and taking in the peaceful atmosphere.
For the Furry Friends
Bring your four-legged companions along! The park features a dedicated dog park with securely fenced areas where dogs can run free. It even has lighting for those evening visits when your pup still needs to burn off energy. Throughout the rest of the park, leashed pets are welcome to join you on your explorations.
Picnics and Gatherings
When hunger strikes, you'll come across plenty of picnic spots with green space, tables, and grills for impromptu cookouts. Several gazebos dot the landscape and can be reserved through the city if you're planning something special - they provide welcome shade on sunny days and shelter if the weather turns.
Restroom facilities are available across the park, however cleanliness can vary depending on when you visit. You'll also find drinking water and trash receptacles conveniently placed around the grounds.
More Than a Park
Centennial Park has become a cornerstone in Davenport's riverfront revitalization efforts. Beyond its day-to-day uses, it hosts community events all year long and occasionally even is the triumphant endpoint for RAGBRAI, Iowa's famous cross-state bicycle ride.
The transformation from industrial space to public park represents a significant change for this section of Davenport's riverfront.
