Birdland Park

River's Edge Escape

If you're patient and quiet enough, you might catch a glimpse of the bald eagle family that calls Birdland Park home - and that alone makes it worth a visit. The park runs along the Des Moines River in the Union Park neighborhood, and the riverside setting brings genuinely beautiful views along with plenty of wildlife-watching opportunities.

True to its name, you'll likely spot various bird species flitting about as you explore. Nothing quite matches the moment when you spot those majestic birds soaring overhead.

Making Waves

At the heart of Birdland sits a marina and lake that become hubs of activity when the weather warms up. You can enjoy boating or fishing in these waters.

Fishing enthusiasts particularly enjoy trying their luck at the marina, where catches of Northern Pike and even the occasional muskie have been reported. It's worth noting that recent improvements to the levee system have better protected the surrounding neighborhood from flooding - something this area has struggled with historically.

Paths to Wander

A smooth, paved trail encircles the lake, meant for when you need to stretch your legs, get your heart rate up, or simply clear your mind. This path connects to the broader Des Moines trail system, so you can extend your journey if you're feeling adventurous.

Many people find these trails ideal for a peaceful lunchtime escape or a calming evening walk. The paths are well-maintained and offer those quiet moments we all sometimes need to reset and reconnect with nature.

Kid-Friendly Fun

If you've got little ones in tow, you'll appreciate the ADA-accessible playground that caters especially well to younger children. On hot days, the splash pad becomes a magnet for kids looking to cool off while burning some energy.

One standout feature families love is the charming carousel that operates daily. Children typically enjoy the timeless experience of a carousel ride. Rest assured, all the play areas are kept clean and safe for children to explore.

Gathering Spots

Planning a get-together? The park offers enclosed shelters you can reserve ahead of time for picnics and events. The larger pavilion even comes with air conditioning - a true blessing during those sticky Iowa summer days.

The covered picnic areas are consistently well-maintained, making them ideal for family reunions or casual gatherings with friends. The peaceful setting provides a nice atmosphere for sharing meals.

Beyond the Park

When hunger strikes, Captain Roy's sits right in the park, serving up food and drinks that hit the spot after a day of outdoor activities. This waterfront spot adds another dimension to Birdland's appeal.

You'll also find a swimming pool nearby, offering another cooling option during summer months. With so many diverse activities in one location, Birdland Park lets you design your perfect outdoor day - whether that means active adventure or gentle relaxation.
