About the Location
Natural Playscape
Tucked away in Des Moines, Sargent Park features a pretty unique natural playscape where kids can really immerse themselves in environmental play. There's a hollow tree climb that little adventurers love to explore, a climbing rock well-suited for testing those growing muscles, and a good old-fashioned sandbox where imagination runs wild.
Fair warning though - your kiddos will definitely get dirty here! That's all part of the charm. The natural elements provide a connection with the outdoors that many kids might not get regularly. Plan to spend about an hour here while the little ones burn off energy in the most delightful way.
Water Features
When the Iowa summer heat kicks in, the sprayground (fancy name for a splash pad) becomes the place to be. It runs from May 1 through September 30, daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. - plenty of time to cool off and have a blast.
What makes this park extra special is its access to Fourmile Creek. There's something magical about creek splashing that brings out the kid in all of us. The stream bordering the park adds a peaceful soundtrack to your visit and offers endless opportunities for pebble-tossing and nature exploration.
Trails and Recreation
Need to stretch your legs? The park connects to the Gay Lea Wilson Trail, a nicely paved path that's meant for walking or biking. If you're cycling through the area's trail system, Sargent Park makes for an ideal rest stop.
When hunger strikes, you'll discover open shelters, picnic tables, and charcoal grills throughout the park. Nothing beats a sandwich with a side of fresh air, right?
Amenities
You'll be happy to know there are modern restroom facilities here - always a plus when spending several hours outdoors, especially with kids in tow.
Keep an eye out for the sundial as you wander through the park. It's one of those thoughtful touches that blends constructed elements with the natural surroundings, making the space feel both intentional and organic.
Historical Significance
If you're curious about local history, take a moment to check out the informational board featuring the Sargent family. These early area residents gave the park its name, and learning about them adds another layer of appreciation to your visit. It's a small but meaningful connection to the people who shaped this community long before our time.
