About the Location

Recreational Facilities

The swimming pool is definitely one of the stars of Parkwood Park - a wonderful spot to beat the Kansas heat during those sweltering summer months. It's become something of a neighborhood gathering place where families splash around and locals come to cool off.

Don't expect fancy water slides or wave machines though; this is your classic public pool experience - clean and well-maintained, but refreshingly unpretentious. Just make sure to check the seasonal hours before you grab your towel and sunscreen.

If swimming isn't your thing, the park's tennis court might be more your speed. It's nicely lit for evening matches, so you can still get your game in even after the sun goes down. Regardless of whether you're serving aces or just learning the basics, there's space for all skill levels here.

Playground and Community Spaces

The playground got a complete makeover in 2023, and it wasn't just any renovation. This playspace was actually designed with input from the kids who use it - how cool is that? Local volunteers, organizations, and nonprofits all pitched in to make it happen, showing some serious community spirit.

Every year, about 300 children come here to climb, slide, swing, and just be kids. It's a thoughtfully designed area where parents can easily keep an eye on the little ones while taking a moment to relax themselves.

Beyond the playground, you'll find plenty of open green spaces excellent for throwing a frisbee, setting up a casual game of tag, or simply spreading out a blanket to enjoy some quiet time outdoors.

Picnic and Shelter Areas

The shelter house has been a Parkwood Park fixture for generations of Kansas City families. With its collection of picnic tables, it offers a shady retreat for everything from birthday celebrations to Sunday afternoon hangouts. The space is clean and roomy enough to accommodate groups of various sizes.

Feeling hungry? Fire up one of the grills near the shelter and cook up something delicious. Just note that the electrical outlets at the shelter might not be working, so plan your gathering accordingly.

Walking Trail and Amenities

The elevated walking trail that meanders through the park is excellent for morning jogs, afternoon strolls, or simply wandering while you clear your head. It's nicely integrated with the natural surroundings, making your walk or run a bit more interesting than circling a track.

You'll appreciate that the park has good lighting after sunset, making those evening visits feel safer and more comfortable. Restrooms are available on-site, though you'll want to remember they typically close during the winter months.

Park Management

The Unified Government Parks and Recreation Department keeps everything running smoothly at Parkwood Park. They've been putting in real effort lately to upgrade and improve the facilities.

This neighborhood green has deep roots in the community - some locals have been coming here for more than 50 years!
