About the Location

Inclusive Playground Features

At the heart of Strang Park is an inclusive playground, designed for children of all physical and developmental abilities. The fully fenced playground with its single rainbow gate entrance gives parents peace of mind while kids explore freely. Little adventurers can conquer the impressive 30-foot tower with a slide, crawl through the sensory tunnel, tackle climbing cargo nets, or bounce on the in-ground trampolines. A communication board for non-verbal visitors helps make play accessible to more children.

The younger crowd hasn't been forgotten either. A separate toddler playground features charming Farmers' Market-themed play structures and a nature play area where imagination takes the lead. Throughout the playground, you'll find soft, padded surfacing instead of dirt or sand - which is easier on knees and generally cleaner.

Recreational Amenities

The fun extends well beyond the playground across this 11-acre green space. You'll come across freshly updated tennis and basketball courts for the sports enthusiasts in your group, plus a gaming promenade where you can challenge friends to cornhole, checkers, or oversized lawn chess.

Need to stretch your legs? A loop trail circles the play area, well-suited for a casual stroll or morning jog. When summer temperatures climb, the water mist feature within the playground area provides a refreshing cool-down spot for kids.

Comfort and Convenience

Strang Park has all the essentials you need for spending time outdoors. The restrooms include family-friendly facilities with changing tables and toddler seats. Multiple picnic areas are available both inside and outside the fenced playground, with a covered shelter complete with a grill and tables for those family gatherings.

You won't struggle to find shade here thanks to mature trees throughout the park. Parents can relax in strategically placed Adirondack chairs while keeping an eye on playing children. Water fountains are readily available for visitors, including a special fountain for four-legged friends along the walking path.

Art and History Elements

The park beautifully weaves in elements of local history and inspiration. A vibrant mural by local artist Phil "Sike Style" Shafer adds a splash of color and uplifting imagery to the space.

As you explore, you'll notice inspiring words from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech thoughtfully integrated around the park. The updated shade plaza preserves the original railroad tracks from the historic Strang Line, creating a meaningful connection to the area's past. Historical panels provide context about the railway's importance and the Santa Fe Trail that once ran through this very spot.

Location and Access

The park was completely renovated in 2022, creating a more accessible space for visitors of all ages and abilities.

You'll discover the park conveniently located behind the Johnson County Central Resource Library, making it easy to combine a day of reading and outdoor play. Don't miss the unique book path connecting these two community spaces, where you can read a children's book as you walk. The park welcomes visitors daily from 5AM to 10PM.
