About the Location
A Bit of History
Back in 1955, Julia Emery and Dr. Frank Emery made a pretty thoughtful gesture - they donated this land to Wichita in memory of their parents, Dr. and Mrs. F.W. Emery. Thanks to their generosity, this outdoor space was established and dedicated to public recreation.
Get Moving Outdoors
If you're looking to break a sweat, Emery Park offers a basketball/multi-use court. Just a heads up though - there's no lighting, so plan your games before sunset.
One of the real highlights here is the BMX bike track, built in 1987 by the Group Effort Associated for Races (GEAR). It's not just any track - this 1,250-foot course comes complete with lighting, an asphalt starting hill, and even a concession stand for when you work up an appetite after those jumps and turns.
Natural Escape
Need some quiet time? The fishing pond here is an excellent little retreat. It's usually not too crowded, making it a peaceful spot to cast a line. You'll notice some seasonal algae and duckweed floating around, and if you're patient, you might spot some of the many turtles that call this pond home.
The park offers nice picnic facilities too, including an open shelter with lighting, electrical outlets, seven picnic tables, and a restroom nearby - all the essentials for a comfortable afternoon outdoors.
For families, there's a playground with a sand safety surface where kids can burn off some energy while you relax nearby.
Something Different
What makes Emery Park stand out is the Wichita R/C Raceway - a track dedicated to remote-control car racing. It's a unique feature that you won't find in just any park, and it's definitely worth checking out even if you're just watching.
Getting here is straightforward, and you won't have trouble finding a spot in the 72-stall paved parking lot.
For Everyone
The park is working on improving accessibility, with plans for ADA-compliant paths and drinking fountains to ensure everyone can enjoy what this space has to offer.
Spread across 30.30 acres on E. MacArthur Road, Emery Park has carved out a versatile space that works for all sorts of visitors - if you're an active sports enthusiast, a family looking for a weekend outing, or just someone who needs a bit of green space to unwind.
