About the Location
History and Development
Originally acquired in 1955 from the Public Housing Administration, this park has evolved through additions and community efforts to become a vibrant public space. Significant developments include contributions from the American Youth Soccer Organization and funding from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks as well as the National Park Service.
In 2023, a splash pad was installed as part of Wichita's aquatics master plan, enhancing the park's appeal during the summer months.
Sports and Recreation Facilities
The park features ample open spaces for recreational activities, with notable facilities for sports enthusiasts, such as a cricket field, baseball and softball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis courts, and basketball courts. Its connection to the Gypsum Creek Bicycle Path makes it a valuable hub for biking and walking trails, offering a link to other parts of the city and surrounding amenities.
Visitors can also enjoy a children's playground, picnic shelters, and open areas with benches for relaxation. The addition of a model airplane flying area and trails further enriches the park's uniqueness.
Community Hub
Planeview Park is an inclusive community hub, hosting events like the Candy Crawl and serving as a cooling spot during hot Kansas summers. Its splash pad includes interactive water features, which are especially appreciated by families.
With parking and restroom facilities, the park is accessible and accommodating for gatherings and daily visits. These offerings reflect its commitment to providing diverse recreational opportunities for the surrounding neighborhood.
