A Park With History

If you've ever wondered about that green space in southeast Wichita, there's quite a story behind Planeview Park. Acquired back in 1955 from the Public Housing Administration, this park hasn't just sat still - it's grown through community love and effort over the decades. The American Youth Soccer Organization pitched in (pun intended), while funding from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and the National Park Service helped shape what we see today.

The summer of 2023 brought an exciting addition when a splash pad was installed as part of Wichita's aquatics master plan. It's a popular spot for families looking to escape those brutal Kansas summer days.

Get Your Game On

The park offers options for both team sports and solo activities. Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the cricket field (not something you find everywhere!), baseball and softball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis courts, and basketball courts.

The baseball fields regularly host local teams and youth leagues - parents, bring your folding chairs because the open layout gives great views of the action. If cycling is more your speed, the park connects to the Gypsum Creek Bicycle Path, making it easy to extend your adventure beyond park boundaries.

Kids have options here with multiple playgrounds scattered around the grounds, designed for different age groups. Looking for a picnic spot? Take your pick from several picnic areas with shelters, or just grab a bench in one of the open spaces for some quiet time.

What makes this park stand out is its model airplane flying area - a somewhat unique feature you don't find in every city park. And yes, you can bring Fido along! The park is dog-friendly, so the whole family (four-legged members included) can enjoy a day out.

Splish, Splash

The newer splash pad has quickly become a park highlight. With interactive water features that kids love, this spray park offers a somewhat secluded atmosphere that gives you a bit more privacy than some of the busier water features around town.

On those days when the temperature climbs and the air gets sticky, this cooling spot becomes the place to be. Nothing beats watching kids run through water sprays when it's 95 degrees outside.

Where Community Happens

Beyond the physical amenities, Planeview Park represents a genuine community hub. It hosts events like the Candy Crawl and provides space for neighborhood get-togethers. If you're lucky, you might catch local firefighters training here - it's actually pretty fascinating to watch from a safe distance.

The park offers parking and restrooms (though they're only available seasonally - something to keep in mind when planning your visit). While some visitors mention that year-round bathroom access would be nice, the park offers diverse recreation opportunities for everyone in the neighborhood.
