Historic Significance

Federal Hill Park is a historic and scenic destination located on the south shore of Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Spanning approximately 8.5 acres at its base and 4.5 acres at its plateau, the park is renowned for its panoramic views of the Baltimore skyline and the Inner Harbor.

Origins and Evolution

The park's history dates to the early 1600s when Captain John Smith described the area as a "great red bank of clay." Over time, it became an important civic landmark, earning its name in 1788 after the celebration of Maryland's ratification of the U.S. Constitution.

During the Civil War, the Union army fortified the hill, and remnants of this era, such as cannons, can still be seen on-site. In 1880, Federal Hill was officially purchased and transformed into a public park by Baltimore City.
