Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park
About Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park
A Historic Harbor Haven
Stretching along Boston's shoreline since 1976, Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park holds the distinction of being the city's first waterfront green space. Spanning about 4.5 to 5 acres in the North End, this urban oasis creates a peaceful bridge between downtown's energy and the harbor's calming waters.
Walk the cobblestone paths and you'll feel the maritime history beneath your feet. The park's thoughtful design, with its brick paving and wooden elements, tells the story of Boston's seafaring past. Find a spot along the edge and you're treated to sweeping views of Boston Harbor - watch sailboats glide by, ferries shuttle passengers, and if you time it right, planes taking off from Logan Airport just across the water.

Garden Spaces & Scenic Spots
The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Garden stands as a quiet tribute to the famous Boston family. Enclosed by elegant wrought iron, this garden centers around a granite fountain and bursts with seasonal blooms that transform the space year-round.
One of our favorite spots has to be the wisteria-covered trellis that creates a living canopy overhead. During daylight hours, it offers welcome shade, while evenings bring a magical transformation as lights twinkle among the vines. In winter, the trellis takes on an enchanted quality with blue lights creating a frost-like glow that's worth bundling up for.
Take a moment to visit the Massachusetts Beirut Memorial, a thoughtful tribute to local marines who perished in the 1983 bombing. Throughout the park, you'll discover open lawns fantastic for sprawling out, a brick promenade that leads you harborside, and rose gardens that add pops of color and fragrance to your visit.
Something for Everyone
The park welcomes visitors of all ages with spaces designed for various activities. Little ones gravitate toward the playground with climbing structures (best for kids 3-4 and up), while the spray fountain becomes a summertime favorite for cooling off during Boston's warmer months. Occasionally, the performance area comes alive with music and community events.
The grassy expanses invite you to spread out a blanket for picnicking, dive into a good book, toss a frisbee, or simply watch the harbor activity. While there aren't designated picnic tables, you'll find plenty of benches and lawn space with water views that make any meal feel special.
Four-legged friends are welcome here, and the park's design ensures accessibility for wheelchair users as well. Year-round, the space transforms for seasonal celebrations - from open-air movie screenings to Italian festivals and holiday decorations. If you can visit during spring's cherry blossom season or winter's light displays, you're in for a particular treat.

A Park in Transition
Despite its name honoring Christopher Columbus, the park has evolved alongside changing perspectives - including the removal of Columbus's statue following controversial incidents. Today, it remains a gathering place for Bostonians from all backgrounds.
History buffs might appreciate knowing this spot marks the beginning of the Boston Irish Heritage Trail and holds significance for both Italian-American and Irish-American communities. This blend of historical importance, natural beauty, and cultural significance makes it one of Boston's notable public spaces.
Explore Beyond
The park's central position makes it an excellent rest stop during Boston adventures. When you're ready to move on, you're just a short walk from North End's mouthwatering Italian restaurants, the bustling Quincy Market, historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace, and the fascinating New England Aquarium. For those looking to extend their harbor experience, catch a ferry from adjacent Long Wharf to discover more of Boston's waterfront treasures.
