About Corporal Burns Park
A Piece of Cambridge History
Tucked away in Cambridgeport is a park with deep roots in local history. Corporal Raymond Burns Playground was dedicated back on May 31, 1920, honoring a Cambridge hero who served in World War I. There's something special about spending time in a space that has been bringing the community together for over a century.
Get Your Game On
Spread across 1.4 acres, this community hub has plenty to offer active visitors. Basketball enthusiasts will appreciate the two full-sized courts complete with quality backboards and forgiving rims (your shots off the backboard might actually go in!). What makes these courts extra special is the lighting that stays on until 11:15 PM, with some ambient illumination afterward - meant for those summer evening games when you just can't call it quits.
If basketball isn't your thing, check out the street hockey rink where you can work on your slap shot or join in on community games.
ADBoston: Harvard & Cambridge Walking Food Tour
On our Secret Food Tour: Boston – Harvard & Cambridge, you'll escape the hustle and bustle of downtown to explore a charming New England college town just across the river. Our experienced guides will lead you on a historic adventure past stately brick buildings and ivy-covered walls, the heart of America’s most famous university—Harvard.
Family-Friendly Fun
Bringing the kids? The playground area features climbing structures that children can enjoy. During hot summer days, the waterplay features and sprinklers provide a refreshing escape from the heat.
A Natural Retreat
Despite being in the heart of Cambridge, the park offers a peaceful atmosphere. Mature trees create generous shade around the perimeter, making this an ideal spot to escape the urban hustle. The open grassy areas are great for spreading out a blanket, enjoying a sandwich, or just lounging with a good book. Well-maintained paths weave throughout, inviting you to take a stroll or get in your daily steps.
Easy to Reach
You'll come across Corporal Burns Park in the Cambridgeport neighborhood, conveniently accessible via public transportation. It's just a 10-minute walk from the Harvard T station on the Red Line, or you can hop off the 1 Bus Route at the Mt. Auburn St. and Putnam Ave. stop.
The Local Scene
The basketball courts tend to be the social hub of the park, drawing players of all skill levels. Depending on when you visit, you might find a quiet court for practicing your jump shot or an energetic pick-up game to join. The vibe changes throughout the day, so you can usually find the atmosphere that suits your mood.
