About Hancock Adams Common

A Walk Through History

Set in downtown Quincy, Massachusetts, Hancock Adams Common is a three-acre urban oasis that opened in 2018. This isn't just any park - it's a living tribute to Quincy's famous sons: John Adams, John Quincy Adams, and John Hancock. Walking through this space, you can almost feel the whispers of revolutionary America.

The park features a charming tree-lined promenade that connects some of Quincy's historical treasures, including the United First Parish Church, Old City Hall, and Hancock Cemetery. The church itself holds a special place in American history - it's where both Adams presidents and their wives are buried, and yes, you can actually visit their tombs.

What You'll See

At the heart of the Common, two ornamental fountains bring the space to life. The standout is a 2,500 square foot "tidal fountain" with 200 jets shooting water up to 12 feet high - a nice nod to Quincy's 27 miles of coastline.

Keep an eye out for the impressive bronze statues by Sergey Eylanbekov. John Adams stands tall at the north entrance, while John Hancock watches over the southern end near his namesake cemetery. Across the park, historical inscriptions tell the stories of these revolutionary figures who helped shape our nation.

As evening falls, the vintage lamp posts light up, casting a warm glow across the Common.

A Modern Touch on Historic Ground

Creating this space was no small feat - it involved completely reimagining Hancock Street, once a busy four-lane road. The result? A pedestrian-friendly space where you can stroll without worrying about traffic.

There's plenty of seating with large benches scattered throughout, ideal for taking a moment to rest or simply watch the world go by. Look closely and you'll notice elements of granite incorporated into the design - a thoughtful homage to Quincy's once-booming granite industry.

Every Season Brings Something New

No matter when you visit, Hancock Adams Common has something to offer. In summer, massive trees provide welcome shade from the heat. Fall brings a spectacular show as those same trees burst into color. Winter transforms the Common with a special light display that adds magic to the cold months. And spring? That's when the landscaped gardens wake up, painting the space with fresh blooms.

Far From Just a Park

Hancock Adams Common has quickly become the heart of Quincy's community life. It hosts various events throughout the year, including Spring Fest with activities for the whole family.

The car-free environment creates a peaceful retreat from the surrounding urban bustle. You'll see locals walking their dogs (on leashes), people cycling through, or just folks taking a moment to relax in this well-kept, smoke-free space.

It's also a popular spot for wedding photos, offering a blend of natural beauty and American history in a single setting.
