About the Location
Park Overview
Located at the corner of Ellsworth and Platt Roads in southeast Ann Arbor, Bicentennial Park (formerly Southeast Area Park) covers 26.5 acres of community green space. Freshly renamed in 2023 to celebrate Ann Arbor's upcoming 2024 bicentennial, this park has become a go-to spot where families gather, sports enthusiasts compete, and nature lovers find their slice of outdoor tranquility.
Recreational Amenities
Kids have their pick of two distinct playgrounds here - one specially designed for the under-5 crowd and another that caters to the 5-12 age group. Both areas come equipped with the classics: swings and slides that keep little ones entertained for hours. The younger kids' area also features a sandbox that's excellent for creative play.
Sports enthusiasts won't be disappointed either. The lighted softball/baseball fields let games continue even as the sun sets, while the soccer field hosts everything from casual kickarounds to organized matches. The basketball court stands out with its eye-catching bicentennial-themed mural by a local artist - it's usually buzzing with activity throughout the warmer months.
If you're looking to get some steps in, the paved multi-use path that loops around the park stretches just over a half-mile. It works well for a quick jog, a leisurely stroll, or a family bike ride without having to navigate city streets.
Picnic and Gathering Areas
When hunger strikes, you'll come across picnic areas scattered across the grounds with plenty of tables for impromptu lunches or planned gatherings. Need shelter from sun or sprinkles? The spacious picnic shelter near the restrooms offers coverage and can be reserved for events. Planning a cookout? Several charcoal grills stand ready for your burgers and hot dogs.
As evening approaches, the park often transforms into a community gathering space, with softball and baseball games under the lights creating a lively, neighborly atmosphere.
Facilities
No need to cut your park day short - centrally located restrooms are available and typically well-maintained with soap and other necessities. Bringing your four-legged friend along? No problem. The park is dog-friendly, however your pup needs to stay leashed, and you'll need to clean up after them (as any good neighbor would).
Future Developments
While the park already offers plenty to enjoy, exciting improvements are on the horizon. Plans include Ann Arbor's first universally accessible splash pad and upgrades to existing features. These enhancements align with the city's A2Zero sustainability goals - think solar panels and on-site energy storage that will make the park as environmentally friendly as it is fun.
Surrounding Area
Bicentennial Park is a welcoming gateway to Ann Arbor, with the Scarlett-Mitchell Nature Area and Lillie Park nearby, creating a trifecta of outdoor spaces to explore. If you're seeking structured recreation or just a pleasant spot to unwind, this park offers both structured recreation and pleasant spots to unwind on Ann Arbor's southeast side.
