A Green Urban Oasis

Positioned on South University Avenue at Walnut Street, South University Park is a half-acre space in Ann Arbor's residential landscape. Just east of downtown's hustle and bustle, this pocket-sized green space offers a quiet retreat where you can sprawl out on the grass with a good book, soak up some sunshine, or simply enjoy a peaceful moment outdoors.

From Abandoned Houses to Community Treasure

This little park has quite the backstory. Back in the early 1970s, where the park now stands, two abandoned houses once sat empty. Rather than letting the space go to waste, determined neighbors rolled up their sleeves and transformed it into a grassroots community park. Their persistence paid off when the City of Ann Arbor officially purchased the property.

The park wouldn't exist without the dedication of Leslie and Michael Morris, who championed its creation. Leslie's passion for public spaces didn't stop there - she later served on both the Ann Arbor City Council and Park Advisory Commission, continuing to advocate for green spaces throughout the city.

A Fresh Face for an Old Friend

Like many of us, South University Park needed a little rejuvenation after decades of loyal service. In 2012-2013, the park got its much-deserved makeover. Out went the weathered benches and dilapidated kiosk, while the basketball court received fresh paving.

This renovation became possible thanks to a $50,000 donation from the Morris family, helping the park remain a neighborhood green space for years to come.

What You'll Find

South University Park keeps things simple with just the essentials for a casual outdoor visit. The accessible basketball court might sport a slightly crooked hoop, but it's perfectly functional for shooting around with friends.

When you're ready to catch your breath, several benches scattered across the park offer perfect perches for people-watching, reading, or simply enjoying a moment of calm. Just note that there are no restrooms available, so plan your visit accordingly.
