About the Location
A Glimpse Into Michigan's Rural Past
Located in Superior Township near Ann Arbor, Staebler Farm County Park offers a refreshing blend of history and nature across its 98 acres. This isn't your typical park - it's a living time capsule of Michigan's agricultural heritage with a modern twist.
The landscape is dotted with charming historical structures - barns, a well house, and silos - each telling stories of the region's farming past.
What You'll Find Here
Walking through Staebler Farm connects you with Michigan's rural history. The park combines meadows, woodlots, and wetlands with preserved farm elements. Two peaceful bodies of water, Peaceful Pond and Heidt Pond, offer tranquil fishing spots for those looking to cast a line.
Natural-surface trails meander through hayfields, ideal for a leisurely stroll. One of the park's highlights is the Michigan Folk School, where you can channel your inner pioneer by learning traditional crafts like blacksmithing, woodworking, and fiber arts.
Things To Do
If you're bringing little ones along, the flat, prairie landscape is suitable for toddlers still learning to walk. In June, you can see fireflies lighting up the open fields in the evening.
During the year, the park hosts various programs, including popular archery classes run by the Washtenaw Parks and Recreation department. Note that restrooms are only available during scheduled program times, so plan accordingly.
Getting Around
Currently, you can freely explore the open spaces south of Plymouth Road, which are fantastic for walking and wildlife watching. Many locals bring their four-legged friends to enjoy the well-maintained grounds.
Just be aware that the north side, home to historic buildings and farm infrastructure, is still under development and off-limits to visitors. There's ample parking available.
Nature Vibes
While Staebler Farm isn't a dense forest, its open prairie setting offers a different kind of experience. A pleasant breeze often sweeps through the grounds, and you'll spot fascinating insects and wildlife if you take the time to look. Despite being next to a road, there's a surprising sense of peace here.
What's Coming Next
Backed by the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission, this park continues to evolve. Future plans include restoring the historic farm structures, expanding the trail network, adding more trees, introducing small grazing animals, and building a picnic pavilion.
Future plans include not just preservation but also showcasing sustainable living practices alongside Michigan's farming traditions.
