About Cadillac Square Park in Detroit
Cadillac Square Park, located immediately east of Campus Martius Park in downtown Detroit, is a revitalized public space that blends historical significance with contemporary urban design. Historically, it was the site of the Detroit Farmer’s Market from 1841 to 1891 and later housed a bus transfer station in the 1960s. The park was re-established and opened in the summer of 2007 to increase the amount of green space in the city, complementing nearby Campus Martius Park. Notably, the park is home to the Bagley Memorial Fountain, which was relocated from Campus Martius and serves as a historical monument and central feature of the park.
The park is a hub for seasonal activities and functions, hosting events like pétanque, a French sport, which is played every workday from noon to 1 p.m. Bocce, an Italian game, is also enjoyed here. Additionally, during the winter season, Cadillac Square transforms into a festive setting with the Cadillac Lodge, a heated pop-up tent offering family-friendly games, cozy seating, and festive refreshments. The park also serves as a venue for Detroit’s Christmas markets, featuring local vendors and a festive environment.
Known for its beautiful perennial gardens and open seating areas, Cadillac Square Park provides a relaxing space amidst the bustling downtown. It frequently hosts food truck rallies, weekly markets, and other community-driven events. These activities, combined with the park's historical and cultural elements, make it an integral part of downtown Detroit’s public spaces.
