About the Location
A River Runs Through It
Located in southwest Detroit, Riverside Park stretches across 29 acres of waterfront along the Detroit River, just south of the Ambassador Bridge. What was once an industrial site has transformed through community-driven projects that have reclaimed this slice of riverfront for public use.
From here, you can soak in some truly gorgeous views of the Detroit River, the city's downtown skyline, and both the towering Ambassador Bridge and the newer Gordie Howe Bridge. There's something oddly mesmerizing about watching massive freighters and barges glide by while you're just sitting there with your thoughts.
From Bland to Grand
Recent renovations have expanded the park's boundaries, improving its connection with the river. A notable addition is the interactive splash pad that serves two purposes - a water playground when it's warm and a visually interesting space when it's too cold for splashing around.
When winter blankets the city, grab your sled and head to the park's sledding hill, which also happens to be a fantastic spot to take in those postcard-worthy views of the river and downtown. The extension of Grand Boulevard right into the park means it's now easier to reach whether you're driving, cycling, or hoofing it.
The space has changed significantly over time. Many locals who remember its humble beginnings note the contrast with today's well-maintained park.
Play Your Way
The park primarily focuses on nature and leisure activities. Recent improvements have enhanced both upland and lowland habitats, added a walking loop for those who like to get their steps in, and updated the picnic shelters where you'll occasionally find concerts and performances happening.
Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate the fishing boardwalk, while the park's section of the Detroit Riverwalk now features upgraded seating, including those popular swinging benches that face the water (they're always the first to get claimed on nice days). If you're into outdoor workouts, check out the fitness area with its modern equipment. And yes, your four-legged friend can come along - the adjacent dog park welcomes pups to play.
For the more active crowd, there are basketball courts and a well-designed skate park that draws skateboarders ranging from wobbly beginners to impressive tricksters. Kids have several playgrounds scattered around the park, each designed to spark imagination and adventure.
The Practical Stuff
The park offers clean public restrooms with running water and baby changing stations. The picnic areas with their covered shelters are popular for family gatherings and small get-togethers. You'll want to book these well ahead of time if you're planning an organized event.
Parking is free and plentiful across the park, so that's one less thing to stress about. Flower planters add color to the landscape, and chess and checker tables offer options for those looking for a more thoughtful activity.
When to Wander
If you ask us, Riverside Park really shows off at sunset, when the golden light paints the river and bridges in warm hues. The park welcomes visitors from 6AM to 10PM daily, with the splash pad typically shutting down around 7PM.
Daylight hours are probably your best bet for fully enjoying all the amenities safely. And if you come on summer weekends, you might luck into finding food trucks, which always adds a festive touch to the experience.
Looking Forward
Riverside Park represents an effort to transform former industrial space into a recreational area that combines outdoor activities with ecological improvements. With the ongoing development of the Riverwalk, the park continues to evolve.
