About the Location

A Walk Through History

Nestled along the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids, Ah-Nab-Awen Park is a 6.5-acre green haven with roots deeper than its well-tended grass. This wasn't always just a pretty spot for city dwellers to catch their breath - it was once home to a Native American village before transforming into the park we know today through a bicentennial project that actually asked locals what they wanted (imagine that!).

The name "Ah-Nab-Awen," meaning "Resting Place," wasn't picked randomly from a hat; it was thoughtfully chosen by Elders of the Three Fires Council to honor the Indigenous heritage that flows through this land. There's something undeniably special about standing by the ancient Grand River, knowing it continues to be a gathering place for Indigenous peoples today.

Art That Speaks

Walk through Ah-Nab-Awen and you'll quickly realize it's not just grass and trees. The park cleverly weaves together art, history, and nature in a way that doesn't feel forced. Public art installations and interpretive markers dot the landscape, offering little history lessons without the classroom feel.

Kids (and let's be honest, plenty of adults) get a kick out of "Lorrie's Button," a giant red button sculpture that beckons for interaction. During ArtPrize and the World of Winter festival, temporary installations fill the space - illuminated displays brighten winter evenings, tunnel murals add interest to pathways, and unique sculptures dot the landscape.

Nature's Downtown Balcony

Ah-Nab-Awen offers excellent views of Grand Rapids' downtown, especially nice in the evening when city lights reflect on the river's surface. The gentle rolling hills aren't just pretty - they're practical too, representing picnic spots in summer and sledding paradises when snow blankets the ground.

The sound of the Grand River provides a peaceful backdrop, creating a quiet space within the city.

Where Grand Rapids Celebrates

Ah-Nab-Awen isn't just a pretty face - it's where the city comes together. The park hosts Grand Rapids' Fourth of July fireworks and Celebration on the Grand, with plenty of lawn space for everyone to spread out. On regular days, you'll spot joggers circling the grounds, dogs walking their humans, and friends sharing picnics.

The park sits right next to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, with river views and open green spaces. The paved paths are wide and maintained, good for walking, jogging, biking, or using electric scooters.

Before You Go

The practical stuff matters too: you'll come across public restrooms, WiFi that actually works, and features that make the park accessible to everyone. Pedestrian bridges connect to the city's broader trail system, so you can easily extend your adventure beyond the park's boundaries.

Note that the park operates from 7:30AM to 11PM Monday through Friday, and is also open on weekends. Parking is available, however it can fill up quickly during events, so consider hoofing it or grabbing public transport if something big is happening.

Ah-Nab-Awen Park combines cultural significance with natural space, connecting Grand Rapids' history with its present. It's a pleasant place to spend some time.
