About the Location

A River's Staircase: The Fish Ladder Art Installation

Located next to the Grand River in Grand Rapids sits Fish Ladder Park, home to a fascinating blend of art and ecology. This riverside park features a functional architectural artwork created by artist Joseph Kinnebrew back in 1974. Think of it as a watery staircase designed specifically to help migrating fish bypass the Sixth Street Dam as they journey upstream.

The ladder itself consists of a series of pool-like steps that allow salmon, steelhead, and other determined swimmers to essentially "climb" over the dam by jumping from one pool to the next. It's a solution that helps fish navigate around the powerful man-made rapids in the Grand River.

When the Fish Are Running

If you want to see this natural spectacle, timing is everything. Spring and late summer bring various species to the ladder, including the impressive Chinook and Coho salmon, steelhead, and occasionally some suckers, walleye, and smallmouth bass.

For the best salmon-watching experience, plan your visit between early September and late October. If steelhead are more your thing, try early November to mid-December, or come back between mid-February and late April.

Fishing Spot (Just Not in the Ladder)

Throughout the year, fishing enthusiasts gather along the riverbanks near the ladder, hoping to hook salmon, steelhead, or catfish from the Grand River. There's even a fish cleaning station on site if you're successful in your catch.

Just remember - while fishing in the river is encouraged, the fish ladder itself is off-limits to anglers. Think of it as a fish safe zone where they can travel without dodging hooks.

Taking It All In

The park offers several great spots to watch the aquatic action, with walkways and viewing platforms that let you get surprisingly close to the swimming fish. The upper and lower viewing decks provide different perspectives of both the ladder and some pretty sweet views of downtown Grand Rapids.

Beyond fish-watching, this is simply a pleasant place to sit by the rushing water, stroll along the riverside path, or take a breather from city life. The sound of flowing water against an urban backdrop creates a calming atmosphere.

What to Expect When You Visit

You'll find a parking lot with free parking, however it can fill up quickly during peak times. Restroom facilities are available near the entrance by the parking lot, but they're seasonal - expect portable toilets during off-periods.

The paved paths along the Grand River are great for a casual walk and are pet-friendly, so bring your leashed dogs along. While there are concrete areas where you can sit and relax, note that the park doesn't have designated picnic areas or playground equipment.

When to Come

The park welcomes visitors year-round, but the stretch from spring through fall offers the most comfortable experience. Early fall draws the biggest crowds as the salmon run hits its peak and the fish ladder becomes a hub of activity.

For a more serene visit, try coming on a weekday morning when fewer people are around. The park closes at 10 PM, and you'll definitely want daylight to properly appreciate what makes this place special.

Beyond Fish

Fish Ladder Park beautifully marries ecological function with artistic design. The ladder itself is considered a sculpture - practical in purpose yet visually interesting.

It's also a living classroom where you can observe the relationship between human engineering and natural processes. Standing there watching fish determinedly making their way upstream, one can't help but appreciate this thoughtful intersection of nature and design that allows river ecosystems to thrive despite urban development.
