About the Location

A Touch of Lansing History

Situated on the south side of Lansing, Michigan, Stabenow Park (formerly Washington Park) has recently been given a new identity. In October 2024, this 43-acre green haven was renamed to honor retiring U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow, who grew up in the neighborhood and has cherished memories of ice skating on the park's pond during winter months (though sadly, the ice rink is no longer available).

One of the park's standout features is a vibrant mural by local artist Tea Brown that celebrates nine remarkable women inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame, including Senator Stabenow herself. It's a colorful reminder of the impact women have had on Michigan's history.

More Than a Park

Stabenow Park functions as both a recreational area and a component of Lansing's broader community planning. Nestled within what planners call a "corridor of care," you'll come across the park strategically located near youth shelters and future justice and public service buildings.

Spanning 43 acres, this spacious retreat has become a favorite spot for family gatherings and anyone looking to escape the city bustle without actually leaving town. There's something wonderfully restorative about finding this much green space in an urban setting.

Play, Sports, and Recreation

Whether you want to play baseball or have a space for kids to be active, Stabenow Park has options. The baseball field regularly hosts youth practices and games, while plenty of open grassy areas invite impromptu frisbee matches or picnic blankets.

Recent renovations have significantly upgraded the park's offerings. The modern playground is now a major highlight, featuring innovative climbing structures that spark imagination and active play. Parents will appreciate how the playground is thoughtfully divided - a smaller area for the little ones and more challenging equipment for children 8 and older.

Natural Beauty

One of the park's simple pleasures is its collection of mature trees dotting the landscape, offering patches of welcome shade on sunny Michigan days. The wooded section provides a mini-forest experience that makes you forget you're in the middle of Lansing.

There's something to be said for having room to breathe, and with its generous acreage, Stabenow Park offers plenty of space to wander, ponder, or just lie back and watch the clouds drift by. Many locals visit regularly to enjoy this natural space.

Amenities for Everyone

Planning a family reunion or birthday celebration? The park's pavilion comes equipped with picnic tables for gatherings large and small. Additional tables are scattered within the grounds - some sun-drenched for the vitamin D seekers and others nestled under leafy canopies for those who prefer shade.

Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the workout station with various exercise equipment. Just a heads-up about the restrooms - while they do exist, you might want to have a backup plan as they're occasionally closed. It's worth checking their status if facilities are essential to your visit.
