Bohanon Park

Bohanon Park, located in the Lind-Bohanon neighborhood of Minneapolis, is a vibrant urban park that offers a wide array of recreational activities for visitors of all ages. The park spans a historically significant site once home to a city workhouse before its transformation into a community space in 1935. Officially named after John C. Bohanon, an early neighborhood settler, in 1946, the park has undergone several developments over the decades to enhance its amenities and green spaces.

The park is directly connected to Jenny Lind Elementary School, creating a seamless integration of recreational and educational spaces. Its historical development has been shaped by neighborhood needs, such as the expansion in the 1950s to include facilities like a wading pool, hockey rink, and shelter building, partially funded by the community. A significant milestone in the park's history includes its grading and landscaping as part of a Works Progress Administration project in 1940.

Today, Bohanon Park serves as a community hub with facilities for both active and passive recreation. It features multiple sports fields, courts, and a wading pool, making it an excellent destination for families and fitness enthusiasts. The park also offers designated picnic areas and playgrounds, inviting opportunities for relaxation and community gatherings. Recent upgrades like resurfaced tennis courts and 100 newly planted trees reflect ongoing efforts to maintain and enhance its usability and aesthetic appeal.

Beyond its recreational offerings, Bohanon Park is recognized for its role in the neighborhood's history and its contributions to enhancing equity through sustained maintenance projects under the city's 20-Year Neighborhood Park Plan (NPP20). Open from 6 a.m. to midnight, the park remains a cherished space in Minneapolis, combining a rich historical legacy with contemporary recreational opportunities.
