About the Location
History and Origins
Found in the McKinley neighborhood of North Minneapolis, Perkins Hill Park spreads across 3.76 acres of public green space. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board acquired this compact green space back in 1948, mostly from tax-forfeited land they obtained from the state.
It's funny to think that what started as a simple playground for little ones has grown into something much more diverse over the decades. And here's a bit of trivia for you - the park has never actually been officially named! It just borrowed its identity from the Perkins Hill Addition where most of the park sits.
Recreational Features
Kids will find plenty to keep them busy at the playground, complete with a jungle gym that offers all the climbing, sliding, and crawling adventures young explorers crave, plus swings for that classic park experience. The littlest visitors have their own dedicated tot lot designed with their safety and abilities in mind. And for those pickup games or shooting practice, there's a basketball court waiting for you.
In 2022, Perkins Hill gained a pretty cool distinction - it became home to Minneapolis' first pump track (also called an all-wheel park). This 900-foot asphalt circuit with its banked turns and mounds isn't just for the pros - it's designed for everyone from kids to adults using bikes, scooters, skateboards, or anything else with wheels.
Pump Track Details
The pump track has quickly become the park's standout feature. With sections designed for riders of different skill levels - from complete beginners to seasoned pros - you'll find your comfort zone whether you're on a BMX bike, mountain bike, or even helping your toddler navigate on a balance bike.
What makes the track special is how riders can use body movements rather than pedaling to maintain momentum through the curves and bumps. It creates this continuous, almost meditative flow once you get the hang of it. An added bonus? The track isn't usually crowded, giving you plenty of space to practice or just cruise around at your own pace.
Landscape and Amenities
The park's natural slope creates some nice green spaces meant for spreading out a blanket. If you're planning to eat, you'll find grills and a few tables in a small picnic area. Need a breather? Benches are scattered across the grounds for when you want to sit back and watch the action. The trees around the park are still growing into their role, so shade can be limited on sunny days.
A connecting trail runs from the north to south ends, linking all the park features while offering a pleasant path for a stroll or bike ride. The recent pump track addition came courtesy of the 20-Year Neighborhood Park Plan funding - a nice investment in the community.
Note that while there is a portable toilet available, you won't find permanent restroom facilities here. For parking, you'll need to find a spot on the surrounding streets, as the park sits at the end of a road next to the highway.
