About the Location
Veterans Memorial
Located in northeast Minneapolis, this park has deep roots in community efforts and local history. It was created to honor Minnesota's veterans through the Sheridan Veterans Memorial at its center.
The memorial features a striking spherical sculpture made of protective shields, embraced by thoughtfully designed gardens. Vertical markers surrounding it tell the stories of ten conflicts where Minnesotans served. We especially love the peace quotes engraved in granite along the perimeter walk - they really add to the contemplative vibe of the space.
The memorial offers a quiet spot for reflection that feels removed from the bustle of city life. It's less visited than some of Minneapolis's more famous art installations, which helps maintain its calm, meaningful atmosphere.
Riverside Location
Sitting at 1300 Water Street NE, this green space claims a prime spot on the east bank of the Mississippi River. As part of the Above the Falls Regional Park, it offers riverfront views that change with the seasons.
The park has undergone careful restoration work to address riverbank erosion from boat wakes and ice. Features like bioswales and naturalized landscaping help manage water quality while enhancing the natural beauty - practical solutions that blend seamlessly into the landscape.
There's something so peaceful about sitting on one of the benches positioned for sunset views over the water. If you're lucky, you might even catch sight of kayakers navigating the river below, adding life to the already picturesque scene.
Recreational Amenities
In 2019, the park got a significant upgrade with the addition of a modern playground, picnic shelter, basketball court, and interactive art installations. These additions have created a space that accommodates both active recreation and quiet relaxation by the river.
The playground features contemporary equipment with a mix of sunny and shaded areas for kids to explore. Next to the play area, you'll discover a covered picnic shelter with several handicap-accessible picnic tables and grills positioned to take advantage of those river views.
Trails and Activities
The accessible walking paths connect to the broader Mississippi East Bank Trail, making this a great jumping-off point for longer explorations of urban nature. The paved trails are smooth enough for both casual walkers and cyclists, offering a tranquil route along the water.
Yes, it's a bit tucked away behind industrial streets and can be tricky to find the first time you visit. But that hidden quality is exactly what keeps it feeling like a discovered secret. The riverside location has also become something of a local fishing spot, with opportunities to catch smallmouth bass and other species in the Mississippi.
Sheridan Memorial Park manages to be both a meaningful commemorative space and a lovely everyday retreat - a place where history and recreation come together in a way that feels authentic rather than forced.
