About the Location
Historic Origins
Riverside Park, located in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota, spans 27.68 acres and is a part of the Mississippi Gorge Regional Park. This historic two-level park, adjacent to the Mississippi River, offers a lush and serene environment for visitors.
Originally planned by the noted landscape architect Horace Cleveland in 1883, the park reflects his vision of naturalistic beauty, with paths intentionally designed to encourage visitors to explore the woods and lawns freely. Over the years, Riverside Park has undergone numerous upgrades, including the addition of WPA-crafted stone steps in the 1930s, connecting the park's upper and lower sections.
Recreation and Amenities
The park offers a blend of recreational activities, scenic views of the Mississippi Gorge, and a rich historical backdrop. It has developed into a community space where locals and visitors alike can enjoy its amenities.
Notably, the park was among the first in Minneapolis to establish a dedicated off-leash dog area in 2001. Recent improvements have modernized its playground and wading pool, fostering a family-friendly atmosphere.
Community Connections
The park plays a role in athletic activities; for example, the nearby Augsburg University uses it for cross-country and track training.
Besides its recreational benefits, Riverside Park continues to honor its history while adapting to the needs of the community. From hosting events to providing scenic walking paths, it remains a cherished green space in the urban fabric of Minneapolis.
