About the Location
Historic Background
Gluek Riverside Park is a 2.91-acre urban green space located in the Bottineau neighborhood of Northeast Minneapolis, Minnesota. The park offers scenic views of the Mississippi River and serves as a part of the larger Above the Falls Regional Park system.
The park's history is closely tied to the former Gluek Brewery and Gluek Mansion that once occupied the site. Established in 1857, the Gluek Brewery was a significant landmark in the area until its demolition in 1966.
Park Development
The Minneapolis Park Board acquired the land in 1978, primarily to prevent industrial expansion and preserve future park options along the riverfront. Initial improvements to Gluek Riverside Park, including a playground, picnic area, and river overlook, were completed in 1988.
However, the park faced challenges in the early 2000s. In 2004, it was closed due to concerns over contaminated soil resulting from long-term industrial use.
Following remediation work by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Gluek Riverside Park reopened in 2008 with new amenities and landscaping.
Features and Recreation
The park features two river overlooks, providing visitors with panoramic views of the Mississippi River and the surrounding landscape. A picnic shelter is available for group gatherings, making it a popular spot for small events and family outings.
Gluek Riverside Park's location along the Mississippi River makes it an integral part of Minneapolis's ongoing efforts to enhance public access to the riverfront. It serves as a tranquil retreat for local residents and visitors alike, offering a blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities in an urban setting.
