About Lynnhurst Park in Minneapolis
Lynnhurst Park is a 10.3-acre urban green space located in the Lynnhurst neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The park sits at the intersection of West 50th Street and Minnehaha Parkway, adjacent to Burroughs Elementary School.
Originally acquired by the Minneapolis Park Board in 1921, Lynnhurst Park has undergone several developments and improvements over the years. The park was built on peat soil ranging from 6 to 37 feet deep, which posed challenges for construction and maintenance. In 1948, significant improvements were made to address issues caused by the sinking peat, including rebuilding tennis courts and enlarging play areas.
The park features a variety of recreational facilities for visitors of all ages. It includes both a full-size playground and a tot lot for younger children. During the winter months, the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board maintains ice skating and hockey rinks at the park.
Lynnhurst Park is part of the larger Minneapolis parks system and offers year-round programming at its recreation center. The center, which is air-conditioned, includes facilities such as a gymnasium, craft room, and multipurpose spaces. Outdoor amenities extend beyond traditional park features to include a bike pump station and connections to biking and walking paths.
The park's location along Minnehaha Creek and its proximity to Lake Harriet make it a key component of the local ecosystem and recreation network. It serves as a community gathering space and provides opportunities for both organized sports and casual outdoor activities.
