A Touch of History on the Mississippi

Saint Anthony Falls is the only major waterfall anywhere along the mighty Mississippi, and Water Power Park sits right at its eastern edge. This small but mighty 1.4-acre park on the Minneapolis riverbank packs in both stunning natural views and fascinating history.

Established in 2007 as part of Xcel Energy's recreational improvements when they were relicensing the St. Anthony Falls Hydroelectric Project, the park sits in an interesting space between public and private. It's owned by Xcel Energy but managed by the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board, and it's also part of the broader Mississippi National River and Recreation Area.

Postcard-Perfect Views

Let's be honest - the real draw here is the absolutely stunning vistas. The park offers sweeping panoramas of the river, the dramatic cascade of the falls, and the Minneapolis skyline that will have you reaching for your camera. Multiple interpretive panels tell the story of this place, from its sacred significance to Native Americans to its pivotal role in powering Minneapolis's early industrial boom with sawmills and flour mills.

This secluded area is considered by many to offer some of the best views of the Minneapolis skyline available anywhere in the city. The vantage points also give you excellent perspectives of the bridges spanning the Mississippi and the rushing waters below.

Just nearby stands the St. Anthony Falls Hydroelectric Plant, still producing power today and marking a pretty cool historical milestone as the nation's first commercial hydroelectric generation station. History in action!

What to Expect

The park features accessible walking and biking trails winding through open green space, with benches and overlooks strategically placed for those moments when you just need to sit and take in the view.

If you're into learning while exploring, you're in luck - the park houses more than a dozen interpretive nodes highlighting everything from cultural stories to industrial history and ecology. The design is intentionally minimal due to its location on a dam, which actually works in its favor by letting the natural and industrial elements shine.
