About the Location

Location and Size

Located in the southeast corner of Grand and East Forest Avenues in Columbia, Missouri, Downtown Optimist Park is proof that good things come in small packages. At just 0.5 acres, this cozy neighborhood park manages to pack a lot of charm into a compact space, creating a little green oasis right in the heart of the city.

Artistic Touch

One of the first things you'll notice is the eye-catching mural on the privacy fence. Created in 2017 through a collaboration between Jabberwocky Studios and the Parks and Recreation CARE Program, this artwork captures the spirit of the surrounding neighborhood. It's not just a fence - it's a canvas that tells a story about the community.

A Bit of History

This little park has an interesting past. Originally situated on Hickman High School property, it was gifted to the City of Columbia in 1973 by W.H. Gaitor. Over the decades, it's been lovingly maintained and improved, with significant renovations in 1990 and 2015 that upgraded the playground, shelter, and enhanced accessibility to meet ADA standards.

What You'll Find

The park offers a welcoming space for everyone. Kids gravitate toward the shaded playground with its climb and slide set and swing set - fantastic for burning off some energy while parents can relax nearby.

The half basketball court has become something of a community gathering spot. What often starts as a casual one-on-one game has a funny way of growing into spirited five-on-five matches as people walking by decide to join in.

If you need a spot to enjoy lunch or host a small get-together, the park offers a non-reservable shelter, picnic areas with comfortable seating, and a barbecue grill. It's these simple amenities that have helped cement the park's place in the hearts of local residents.

Natural Setting

Despite being small, the park doesn't skimp on natural beauty. Mature trees spread their branches wide, creating plenty of shade and a peaceful atmosphere. On a quiet day, you can sit back and enjoy nature's soundtrack - perhaps the amusing antics of squirrels scampering through fallen leaves.

Note that there are no public restrooms available at this park, so plan accordingly for your visit.
