About the Location

Location and Size

Downtown Optimist Park is a small yet vibrant neighborhood park located at the southeast corner of Grand and East Forest Avenues in Columbia, Missouri. Spanning only 0.5 acres, the park provides a cozy setting for outdoor recreation and community engagement.

Artistic Features

A prominent feature is its privacy fence adorned with a mural, created in 2017 as a collaborative art project by Jabberwocky Studios and the Parks and Recreation CARE Program. This mural reflects the unique culture of the surrounding neighborhood, adding an artistic touch to the park's atmosphere.

History

The park was originally located on Hickman High School property and was donated to the City of Columbia in 1973 by W.H. Gaitor. It has undergone several renovations over the years, with significant improvements made in 1990 and 2015.

These updates included upgrades to the playground, shelter, and compliance with ADA accessibility standards.

Amenities

The current park design fosters a welcoming environment for families, individuals, and children, featuring a playground, swingset, and a half basketball court.

Its non-reservable shelter and picnic areas make it ideal for spontaneous outings and small gatherings. With its close-knit setting and historical ties to the community, the park holds cultural and recreational significance for local residents.
