About the Location
Urban Oasis
Oppenstein Brothers Memorial Park is a small urban park located in the heart of Kansas City's Central Business District at the intersection of 12th and Walnut Streets. The park, occupying approximately one acre, provides a quiet and relaxing space amidst the bustling downtown area.
Surrounded by significant buildings like One Kansas City Place and Town Pavilion, it is a popular spot for businesspeople and passersby to take breaks during their busy day.
Historical Significance
The park was originally dedicated in 1981 in honor of the Oppenstein Brothers, whose jewelry business and charitable work left a significant impact on Kansas City. It underwent a significant redesign between 2006 and 2008, with the new design being dedicated on April 18, 2008.
Artistic Design
The redesign, led by artist Laura DeAngelis and architect Dominique Davison, introduced the "Celestial Flyways" theme, celebrating the natural environment of Kansas City. The centerpiece of the park is an interactive star disc, an anaphoric astronomical machine inspired by ancient designs.
This feature allows visitors to explore the night sky by rotating the star disc to reveal the positions of over 450 stars and 50 constellations etched into its surface. The installation is enhanced with LED lighting for nighttime enjoyment.
Amenities
In addition to the star disc, the park features landscaped areas with seating, providing a tranquil environment for relaxation or small gatherings. The combination of art and nature creates a unique space that connects visitors with both the urban atmosphere and the broader natural world.
