About the Location

A Park With History

Located in the heart of Kansas City, Missouri, Southmoreland Park spreads across 3.86 acres of urban greenery. This green space dates back to 1897, when William Rockhill Nelson donated the land that would later become part of KC's park system.

The park carries quite a bit of history with it - originally part of the South Moreland Addition, it played a role in the City Beautiful movement that emphasized natural landscapes and thoughtful design. The stone walls surrounding parts of the park have stood for over a century, giving the space a distinctive character that sets it apart from other city parks.

What You'll Find There

Bordered by Brush Creek Boulevard, Warwick Boulevard, and Oak Street, Southmoreland offers a peaceful retreat from city life. Unlike many of KC's flatter, more uniform parks, this space features interesting changes in elevation and natural contours that add character to the landscape.

A stream runs through the grounds, surrounded by diverse plant life that changes with the seasons. Within the park, you'll find picnic areas with tables and benches, but many locals prefer to bring blankets and claim a spot on the lush lawn under the shade of mature trees.

For the Kids (and Kids at Heart)

The south end of the park houses a modest but enjoyable playground with climbing equipment that keeps children entertained. While not enormous, it provides just enough adventure for little ones needing to burn off some energy.

The open grassy areas are well-suited for tossing a frisbee, having a picnic, or simply lounging with a good book. Dog owners particularly appreciate the green space for walks with their furry friends - a welcome natural setting amid the urban landscape.

Cultural Heart

Perhaps what makes Southmoreland truly special is its role as the summer home of the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival. For over three decades, this tradition has transformed the park into an open-air theater where you can experience professional Shakespeare productions under the stars.

During festival season, the park's natural amphitheater setting, embraced by those historic rock walls, creates an enchanting venue for performances. Food and drink vendors add to the festive atmosphere, making each show feel like a community celebration.

The park's location is enviably convenient - just a short walk from the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, creating a perfect cultural triangle in this part of the city. If you're attending the Shakespeare Festival, you can easily park at the Nelson-Atkins garage and enjoy a pleasant stroll to the park.
