Sunnyside Park is situated on land that was originally owned by Napoleon Boone, a descendant of the famed Daniel Boone. Over the years, the property transitioned from private ownership to hosting a riding academy.
The space eventually became a public park in the late 1940s, following annexation into Kansas City. The official naming of Sunnyside Park occurred in 1954, and additional expansions were made in 1959.
