About the Location
A Slice of History
Located in Kansas City's Waldo neighborhood, Sunnyside Park sits on land once owned by Napoleon Boone - yes, a descendant of the legendary Daniel Boone. The property has quite the journey - from private land to a riding academy, before finally becoming a public park in the late 1940s after the city annexed the area. It got its official name in 1954, with more land added in 1959.
Get Moving
If you're looking to burn some energy, Sunnyside offers a mix of walking trails, athletic fields, tennis courts, and picnic areas excellent for family outings or hanging with friends.
If you've got little ones, there's a playground that'll keep them entertained, however it's worth noting the equipment is better suited for toddlers and younger children. During those sweltering summer days, the splash pad provides a welcome cool-down spot, even if it's not the fanciest one you can find in KC.
Courts and Courses
The park houses three tennis courts and basketball half-courts that are kept in good shape. Local sports enthusiasts often use the baseball/kickball diamond to practice their skills before official games.
One of our favorite features is the paved walking path that circles the entire park. It's recently been repaved and has good lighting for evening strolls. Whether you're getting in your daily steps, walking your dog, or just enjoying a leisurely amble, it's a great little circuit.
Under the Canopy
What really makes Sunnyside special is its magnificent canopy of trees that blanket the grounds in cooling shade. These aren't saplings - we're talking mature trees that create a genuinely peaceful atmosphere and offer blessed relief during Kansas City's hot months.
Nestled among the charming homes of the Waldo neighborhood, the park's lush greenery makes it feel like a hidden retreat within the city. It's the kind of place where you can momentarily forget you're in an urban setting.
Community Connections
For gatherings large and small, the park offers pavilions equipped with picnic tables and benches. You'll find drinking fountains conveniently placed across the grounds when you need to hydrate.
Sunnyside Park balances quiet relaxation with active recreation. With its natural beauty and various facilities, it's a nice spot to escape the city bustle, whether for a quick game of tennis or reading beneath a tree.
