History and Overview
Established in 1896 through a generous donation of land by Colonel Thomas H. Swope, the park spans an impressive 1,805 acres, making it the largest park in Kansas City and one of the largest urban parks in the United States. Its landscape includes woodlands, meadows, and lakes, offering a serene escape for nature and city lovers alike.
Major Attractions
The park is home to a wide array of attractions that cater to diverse interests. Notable features include the Kansas City Zoo, showcasing over 1,000 animals across 202 acres, and the Starlight Theatre, an outdoor theater hosting concerts and Broadway shows.
For thrill-seekers, the Go Ape Treetop Adventure Course provides zip lines, rope ladders, and other aerial challenges. The Lakeside Nature Center, Missouri's largest wildlife rehabilitation center, adds an educational aspect with its focus on native species.
Sports and Recreation
Sports and fitness facilities abound at Swope Park. It boasts two golf courses, the Swope Memorial Golf Course and the Heart of America Golf Course, as well as the Swope Soccer Village, which features nine soccer fields.
Visitors can also enjoy hiking and biking on scenic trails, play disc golf, and fish at Lake of the Woods. The Southeast Community Center broadens the park's offerings with a gym, pool, and exercise classes.

For families and larger gatherings, the park provides multiple playgrounds, picnic areas, and ten shelter houses. The Thomas H. Swope Memorial offers a historical touch, honoring the philanthropist buried there.
The annual Ethnic Enrichment Festival, held every August, further showcases the cultural diversity of Kansas City through food, music, and dance. Swope Park accommodates over 2 million visitors annually, offering both free and paid activities to suit a variety of recreational and cultural preferences.
