Historical Significance
Established in 1969, the park spans approximately 10 acres and is situated at the corner of Mt. Vernon Street and Park Avenue. The park is named after Major Charles Zagonyi, who led a notable cavalry charge in Springfield during the Civil War on October 25, 1861.
A historic marker commemorating Zagonyi's Charge can be found within the park's circular community flower garden. This stone monument, originally placed in 1931, was relocated to the park to preserve its historical significance.

In 2019, the park underwent improvements, including the addition of a new universal-design accessible playground. The park also features a circular community flower garden that serves as home to the historical marker.
