About the Location
Historic Grounds
Established in 1910, Penrose Park spans 51.22 acres in St. Louis, Missouri. It is strategically located just south of Interstate 70 at Kingshighway Boulevard.
The park is divided into eastern and western sections by Kingshighway Boulevard NE, creating distinct recreational zones with varied amenities.
Sports Facilities
The western side of Penrose Park focuses primarily on athletic facilities. Visitors can enjoy basketball courts, ball fields, and handball courts.
A comfortable pavilion provides shade and rest areas for players and spectators alike. While tennis courts exist within the park, they are currently not in playable condition.
Unique Velodrome
One of the park's most distinctive features is the Penrose Park Velodrome, a specialized banked cycling track located in the southeastern section. This remarkable facility was designed by Olympic cyclist and Schwinn bicycle designer Frank Burlando.
Built in 1962 after the Forest Park Velodrome was dismantled to accommodate Highway 40/64, the track measures 322 meters (formerly described as 1/5 mile) and features impressive 28-degree banking. As one of only 27 velodromes in the United States, it draws cycling enthusiasts from across the region.
In 2019, the velodrome underwent substantial renovations, including the installation of a new concrete surface. The track remains open to the public during daylight hours in dry weather throughout the year.
Recent Improvements
Penrose Park has benefited from recent investments that enhance visitor experience. These include a new jogging path with exercise equipment, additional trees, and a pavilion with BBQ grills.
Families can enjoy the park's playgrounds, while numerous park benches (some donated by local supporters) offer places to rest and appreciate the surroundings.
The homes adjacent to the eastern edge of the park showcase classic St. Louis architecture in good to great condition, adding to the overall charm of the area.
