About the Location
A Quiet Urban Retreat
Established back in 1910, Penrose Park stretches across 51.22 acres in north St. Louis, Missouri. You'll discover it just south of Interstate 70 at Kingshighway Boulevard, which actually cuts through the middle of the park, creating distinct eastern and western sections with their own character. Compared to more popular city parks, Penrose is notably quieter, with a peaceful atmosphere that makes it a good spot to unwind.
Get Your Game On
The western side is where all the athletic action happens. There are basketball courts where locals often shoot hoops, ball fields for baseball and softball enthusiasts, and handball courts for those quick-paced games. A comfortable pavilion provides a nice spot to catch your breath or watch friends play. While tennis courts do exist in the park, they've seen better days and aren't currently playable.
The Cycling Spot You Didn't Know About
The southeastern section contains a notable feature - the Penrose Park Velodrome. This isn't just any cycling track; it's one of only 27 velodromes in the entire United States! Designed by Olympic cyclist and Schwinn bicycle designer Frank Burlando, this 322-meter track features impressive 28-degree banking that has to be seen to be believed.
Built in 1962 after Forest Park's velodrome was removed to make way for Highway 40/64, this cycling retreat underwent a major facelift in 2019 with a brand-new concrete surface. The track is open during daylight hours when it's dry, and even if you're not a cyclist yourself, stopping by to watch an event can be surprisingly entertaining. If you're curious about races, it's worth checking local event calendars to see what's coming up.
Recent Touches Make a Difference
Penrose has been getting some love lately with several thoughtful improvements. There's a new jogging path with exercise equipment for those looking to mix up their workout routine, more trees providing much-needed shade, and a pavilion with BBQ grills well-suited for family gatherings.
Kids will appreciate the playgrounds that offer safe but fun options for burning off energy. Across the park, you'll find plenty of park benches - some donated by community members who care about this space - where you can sit and take in the surroundings. The eastern edge of the park is lined with homes showcasing classic St. Louis architecture in well-maintained condition, adding a bit of neighborhood charm to your visit.
Good to Know Before You Go
Feel free to bring your four-legged friend - the park is dog-friendly, however the usual rules apply: keep them leashed and clean up after them. The open spaces make for pleasant dog walking without the crowds you might encounter elsewhere.
Note that public restrooms might be limited or unavailable, so plan accordingly. What you will find in abundance, though, is tranquility. If you're looking for a quiet moment with a book, a peaceful morning jog, or just some fresh air without the noise, Penrose Park offers a calmer environment than many other urban parks.
