Meet the Animals at This Lesser-Known Park
Tucked away about 15 miles south of the Gateway Arch, Suson Park is a 98-acre retreat in South St. Louis County that offers something you don't find in your typical city park - a working animal farm that welcomes visitors year-round.
What makes this place special is the chance to get up close with farm animals you might not see in your daily urban life. The farm is home to friendly horses, adorable miniature horses, ponies, charming miniature donkeys, an impressive bull, chickens, turkeys, pigs, and playful goats. Many of these animals are happy to receive attention and pets, but like all of us, they have their moody days depending on the weather!
You can find these animals housed across four barns on the property, some dating back to the 1960s. The Barn House is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., giving you plenty of time to visit your favorite farm residents. Don't forget to bring some quarters if you'd like to feed the animals - there's a change machine in the main barn if you need it. Kids especially love the educational center where they can try their hand at milking a life-size dairy cow simulation with rubber udders - a uniquely hands-on farm experience!
Cast a Line or Take a Stroll
Beyond the farm experience, Suson Park boasts four fishing lakes that are freshly stocked each month. If you're hoping to catch blue gill, bass, catfish, crappie, or trout, these lakes offer a peaceful spot to spend a few hours with your fishing rod. The trout fishing here is particularly good, but be aware that the lakes can develop algae during the warmer months.
If fishing isn't your thing, there's still plenty to enjoy. The park features a modern playground area with equipment for kids of all ages from little ones to bigger kids. The playground was renovated recently and features two distinct play areas, however you might want to bring sun protection as shade is limited. Gentle walking paths meander throughout the park, fantastic for a leisurely stroll or a more purposeful walk. Across the grounds, you'll come across numerous picnic areas where you can relax and enjoy a meal outdoors.
Plan Your Visit
Planning a larger gathering? The park offers several reservable shelters and pavilions equipped with plenty of tables and some with BBQ grills. You'll find clean restrooms conveniently located near both the playground and the animal barn area. The park welcomes visitors daily from 8 a.m. until 30 minutes after sunset.
One of the best things about Suson Park is that most activities are completely free, but you might want those quarters for animal feeding - the goats and chickens are particularly appreciative! If you're bringing your four-legged friend, that's fine in most of the park, but keep in mind that dogs aren't allowed in or around the barn areas with the farm animals.
The unique blend of farm life, fishing spots, and traditional park amenities sets Suson Park apart in the St. Louis area. With serene lakes, open spaces, and plenty of picnic locations, it works well for family outings or finding a quiet moment in nature.
